🕳️ KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Confined Space Entry Safety! 🕳️
Welcome to today's safety learning post! Not all workspaces are created equal. A confined space—such as a tank, silo, vault, or pipe—has limited entry and exit points and is not designed for continuous human occupancy.
Entering these areas without proper preparation can turn fatal in seconds due to invisible atmospheric hazards.
Key Safety Principles for Confined Spaces:
Permit-Required Check: Always verify if a space requires a permit. Never enter a permit-required space without authorized clearance.
Atmospheric Testing: Test the air before entry for oxygen levels (must be between 19.5% and 23.5%), flammable gases, and toxic contaminants.
Continuous Monitoring: Gases can shift or accumulate while work is underway; air must be monitored continuously.
Attendant (Hole Watch): Always have a trained attendant stationed outside the space to maintain communication with entrants and manage emergency response.
Ventilation: Use mechanical ventilation systems to purge or supply clean air before and during entry.
Never rush into a confined space—even to rescue a coworker—unless you are properly trained and equipped with rescue gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Plan the entry, test the air, and protect your team! 👷‍♂️⚠️
