Anaphylaxis is one of the most misunderstood medical emergencies in India.
Even today, many people including many medical professionals think a “serious allergy” only means rashes or itching.
So reactions are often treated with:
❌ antihistamines
❌ steroids
❌ “thoda wait karke dekhte hain”
…when what the patient actually needs is epinephrine (adrenaline).
If a likely allergen exposure is followed by symptoms involving more than one body system
For example:
• hives + vomiting + swelling of tongue
• swelling + breathing difficulty
• dizziness + throat symptoms (choking sensation)
that can be anaphylaxis, and treatment should not be delayed.
✨Anaphylaxis does NOT always look dramatic.
✨Sometimes the first symptoms are:
• throat tightness
• sudden coughing
• dizziness
• repeated vomiting
• “something feels wrong” feeling
• voice change
• metallic taste in the mouth
• excessively fussy infant/ funny behaving
And sometimes there may be no skin rash at all.
✨Another major problem I see especially in India:
People rely only on antihistamines or steroids.
But:
👉 antihistamines mainly help itching and hives
👉 steroids take hours to work
👉 neither stops progression of anaphylaxis
Epinephrine works best when given early, ideally within the first few minutes of a severe reaction.
And despite all the fear around it:
Epinephrine is simply adrenaline.
Temporary fast heartbeat or jitteriness can happen, but delaying treatment is far riskier than giving it early when truly needed.
✨One more important point:
Older children and teenagers with food allergies often become “too comfortable.”
They stop carrying emergency medicines because previous reactions were mild, until one day, they aren’t.
👉Bottom line:
When anaphylaxis is suspected, early recognition and timely treatment save lives.
💜Awareness is not panic.
🧡Awareness prevents tragedy.
