Anaphylaxis is one of the most misunderstood medical emergencies in India.

Even today, many people including many medical professionals think a “serious allergy” only means rashes or itching.
So reactions are often treated with:
❌ antihistamines
❌ steroids
❌ “thoda wait karke dekhte hain”

…when what the patient actually needs is epinephrine (adrenaline).

If a likely allergen exposure is followed by symptoms involving more than one body system
For example:

• hives + vomiting + swelling of tongue
• swelling + breathing difficulty
• dizziness + throat symptoms (choking sensation)

that can be anaphylaxis, and treatment should not be delayed.

✨Anaphylaxis does NOT always look dramatic.

✨Sometimes the first symptoms are:
• throat tightness
• sudden coughing
• dizziness
• repeated vomiting
• “something feels wrong” feeling
• voice change
• metallic taste in the mouth
• excessively fussy infant/ funny behaving

And sometimes there may be no skin rash at all.

✨Another major problem I see especially in India:
People rely only on antihistamines or steroids.

But:
👉 antihistamines mainly help itching and hives
👉 steroids take hours to work
👉 neither stops progression of anaphylaxis

Epinephrine works best when given early, ideally within the first few minutes of a severe reaction.

And despite all the fear around it:
Epinephrine is simply adrenaline.
Temporary fast heartbeat or jitteriness can happen, but delaying treatment is far riskier than giving it early when truly needed.

✨One more important point:
Older children and teenagers with food allergies often become “too comfortable.”
They stop carrying emergency medicines because previous reactions were mild, until one day, they aren’t.

👉Bottom line:
When anaphylaxis is suspected, early recognition and timely treatment save lives.

💜Awareness is not panic.
🧡Awareness prevents tragedy.

Feel itching in the mouth, lips, or throat right after eating certain fruits or vegetables?
And suddenly you wonder whether you are "allergic" to this "food".

Surprisingly, it's not a food allergy, but it is what we call an
"Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS)";
also called pollen–food syndrome.

This happens because some raw fruits and vegetables contain proteins similar to pollen allergens.

The immune system confuses these food proteins with pollen proteins, and hence, a local reaction is produced in the mouth.

Common features:
• Itching or tingling in lips, tongue, or throat
• Symptoms start within minutes of eating
• Usually mild and limited to the mouth
• Often seen in people with pollen allergy (allergic rhinitis)

Common examples include: Apple, melon, banana, tomatoes, brinjals etc.

An interesting factor though is:
Many children can tolerate the same food when it is cooked or peeled or given in processed form, because then the allergenic proteins get altered.

Most cases are mild, but in rare instances can become severe.

So dont ignore that itching in your mouth and stopping that food or testing for that food is not going to solve the issue.

Visit an allergy specialist to get the diagnosis confirmed and find out what you are actually allergic to.

👉 Save this if you or your child reacts to raw fruits and vegetables
👉 Share with someone who thinks it’s a “new food allergy.”

Thinking of getting a “hypoallergenic dog” to avoid allergies?
It sounds reassuring… but the science says otherwise.

Because "Dog allergy" is not caused by the dog's fur/hair/coat.
It is actually caused by proteins found in dog’s dander, which is its skin flakes, saliva, and urine.

Some breeds may definitely shed less, but that does not mean they can't cause allergies.

That’s why:
• “Hypoallergenic dog” is not a scientific term or a guarantee against allergies, it is more of a marketing term to increase the dog price
• The same dog may trigger symptoms in one person and not in another
• Choosing a pet based only on breed can lead to disappointment.

If someone is suffering from a nasal allergy or asthma at home,
then the decision to take a pet should be based on symptoms, exposure, and proper evaluation, and not labels.

👉 Save this before choosing a pet

“You are doing everything right… but the allergy got worse.”

If you’ve felt this as a parent, you’re not alone.

One of the most commonly missed factors is stress.

Stress does not directly cause an allergy,
But it can increase reactivity to the same triggers and worsen allergic symptoms.

We often think that children don't have stress.
Truth is, in children, stress is subtle.
Sleep disruption, routine changes, school pressure, or even excessive screen time can contribute.

This is why allergy control is not just about medicines only.

Along with the right treatment,
Sleep, routine, and emotional well-being of a child are equally important for better allergy control.

👉 Save this if your child has unexplained flare-ups in their allergy.
👉 Share this with a parent who feels “treatment isn’t working.”

Allergy testing sounds simple… but it’s often misunderstood.

Not every test is useful, and not every child needs the same type of testing.
In this video, I explain how allergy tests actually work, the different types of allergy tests (skin tests and blood tests/IgE), and when each one is indicated.

You’ll also understand which tests are not recommended and why choosing the right test matters for an accurate diagnosis.

If your child has nasal allergies, wheezing, rashes, or suspected allergies, this will help you make more informed decisions.

📌 Right test, done for the right reason, makes all the difference

Your home looks clean, but you are still suffering from allergies!!
Let's talk about the tiny, creepy creatures living in your home, which are the major cause of trouble for allergic patients.

Dust mites. 🦠
Microscopic, invisible, and absolutely thriving in your homes.
They feed on dead skin cells, which we shed constantly.
Did you know? 😮
An average adult person may shed up to 1.5 grams of skin in a day. This is enough to feed one million dust mites!. 😢
They love warm, humid environments. And they set up camp in the exact places you spend the most time: mattresses, pillows, blankets, curtains, upholstered furniture, soft toys etc.

Your bedroom is basically a dust mite paradise — and you're sleeping in the middle of it.
Children are exposed more because they spend more time on these surfaces.

The result?
Waking up congested before your feet even hit the floor.
Itchy eyes before you leave your pillow.
A runny nose that won't quit no matter how much sleep you get.

But that is not the end of the world. Solutions are there.
Moving on, we will discuss the strategies to tackle the house dust mites sometime next week.

When a child’s nasal allergy does not improve, it’s often not because treatment isn’t working…
It is because a few key things are being missed.

In this part, I will highlight a few other common mistakes I see daily when dealing with nasal allergies:
• Mislabeling an allergy as a recurrent cold and treating as cold
• Repeated short courses of oral steroids for quick relief
• Lack of trigger control at home (dust mite, smoke, fragrance, etc.)
• Overlooking mouth breathing and adenoid enlargement
• Reliance only on non-evidence-based home remedies

Allergic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory condition.
Temporary relief does not equal long-term control.
When the basics are missed,
symptoms keep coming back, and it feels like nothing is working.

Sustained improvement requires:
accurate diagnosis, trigger modification, and consistent therapy.

Pollen allergy is a very common but underdiagnosed entity in India.
If you have repeated sneezing, scratchy throat, or itchy eyes during certain seasons, it may not be the usual “cold”.
You might be having a pollen allergy!!

Pollen allergy (seasonal allergic rhinitis) is caused by tiny particles released by trees, grasses, and weeds, especially during spring and seasonal transitions. These particles are easily inhaled and can trigger symptoms like:

• Frequent sneezing
• Clear, watery nasal discharge
• Nasal blockage
• Itchy eyes, nose, or throat

The key is pattern recognition; symptoms that repeat seasonally or worsen outdoors often point to a pollen allergy.

The good part!!
Early identification, some basic precautions, and proper management can significantly improve your child’s comfort, sleep, and daily functioning.
