Taking vitamin D tablets without a prescription can lead to serious risks:

Vitamin D Toxicity (Hypervitaminosis D): Excess intake causes calcium buildup in your blood (hypercalcemia).

Kidney Damage: High calcium levels can cause kidney stones or permanent kidney damage.

Symptoms of Toxicity: Nausea, vomiting, weakness, frequent urination, and bone pain.

Organ Calcification: Calcium deposits can form in soft tissues, heart, and blood vessels.

Yes, you can still have a Vitamin D deficiency even if you get sunlight exposure. While sunlight is the primary natural source of Vitamin D, several factors can prevent your body from making enough of it:
Use of Sunscreen: Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher blocks over 95% of UVB rays, which are necessary for your skin to synthesize Vitamin D.
Skin Tone (Melanin): Higher melanin levels in darker skin act as a natural sunblock, requiring significantly more sun exposure to produce the same amount of Vitamin D as lighter skin.
Time of Day & Location: Your body produces Vitamin D best when the sun is highest in the sky (midday). Early morning or evening sun doesn't provide enough direct UVB rays.
Covering Clothing: Clothing that covers most of your skin prevents direct exposure to the sun's rays.
Age & Absorption: As you age, your skin becomes less efficient at producing Vitamin D, and underlying liver or kidney conditions can affect how your body processes it.
Glass Barriers: Sitting near a window does not work, as glass blocks the UVB rays needed for Vitamin D synthesis while letting harmful UVA rays through.

A vegetarian diet relies heavily on fortified foods, dairy, eggs, and targeted supplements to reverse and prevent vitamin B12 deficiency, as B12 is naturally found almost exclusively in animal products.

Recommended Foods & Sources

Fortified Foods: Check labels for B12 content (aim for foods providing 100%+ Daily Value per serving).

Nutritional Yeast: Often provides well over 100% of daily B12 requirements in just 1–2 tablespoons.

Fortified Plant Milks: Soy, almond, oat, and coconut milks frequently contain added B12.

Fortified Breakfast Cereals: Convenient daily option when paired with fortified plant milk.

Meat Substitutes: Many plant-based burgers, grounds, and sausages are fortified with B12.

Dairy & Eggs (for lacto-ovo vegetarians):

Milk & Yogurt: Excellent sources; dairy B12 tends to be easily absorbed.

Hard Cheeses: Swiss, mozzarella, and cheddar contain moderate amounts.

Eggs: The yolk contains the B12, though absorption is lower compared to dairy.
