Who cannot donate bone marrow ?

Based on general guidelines from organizations like the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and other health authorities:

1. Age Restrictions
Too Young or Too Old: Most programs restrict donors to a specific age range, typically 18 to 40 or 44, as younger and older individuals may have higher risks or less optimal marrow for transplantation

2. Medical Conditions
People with certain health conditions are generally ineligible to donate due to risks to themselves or the recipient.

3. Chronic or Severe Medical Issues

4. Lifestyle or Behavioral Factors

5. Medications

6. Weight and BMI Restrictions

7.Other Issues.

Difference between amnesia and dementia
Amnesia

Meaning: Memory loss (partial or complete).

Cause: Usually due to brain injury, trauma, stroke, infection, or psychological factors.

Main Feature: Only memory is affected (short-term, long-term, or both). Thinking, reasoning, and personality often remain normal.

Example: Someone with amnesia may forget their name or past events but still solve problems normally.

Dementia

Meaning: A progressive decline in multiple brain functions.

Cause: Often due to diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or vascular problems.

Main Features: Memory loss plus other problems such as confusion, poor judgment, language difficulty, personality changes, and inability to perform daily activities.

Example: A person with dementia may not only forget recent events but also struggle to dress, cook, or recognize familiar people.

Tunnel syndrome usually refers to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a common condition that affects the hand and wrist.

It happens when the median nerve—which runs through a narrow passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel—gets compressed or irritated.

🔹 Causes & Risk Factors:

Repetitive hand or wrist movements (typing, sewing, assembly-line work, etc.)

Wrist injuries or arthritis

Conditions like diabetes, thyroid problems, or pregnancy (fluid retention can increase pressure in the tunnel).

🔹 Symptoms:

Tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles” in the thumb, index, and middle fingers

Weak grip or dropping objects

Pain that may travel up the arm

🔹 Treatment:

Resting the hand and wrist

Wearing a wrist splint, especially at night

Anti-inflammatory medication

Physical therapy or hand exercises

In severe cases, surgery (carpal tunnel release) to relieve pressure on the nerve

It’s one of the most common nerve compression syndromes. There are also other types, like tarsal tunnel syndrome (affecting the ankle/foot).

Peroperative cholangiography

◼️This technique is mainly used to exclude or confirm presence of bile duct stones intraoperatively.

◼️It can be used in both open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a catheter is placed in the cystic duct and contrast injected into the biliary tree (See fig).

◼️It is important to take care not to introduce air into the biliary system, because air bubbles appear as filling defects which resemble that of stones.

◼️The operating table is tilted 20 degrees head down, to allow filling of intrahepatic bile ducts with contrast (see fig )

VEGETARIAN WOMEN RUN HIGHER RISK OF FRACTURES...
A study of over 26,000 middle-aged UK women reveals those with a vegetarian diet had a 33% higher risk of hip fracture compared to regular meat-eaters.
University of Leeds research, published today (Thursday, August 11) in the journal BMC Medicine, investigated the risk of hip fracture in occasional meat-eaters; pescatarians, people who eat fish but not meat; and vegetarians compared to regular meat-eaters.
Among 26,318 women, 822 hip fracture cases were observed over roughly 20 years -- that represented just over 3% of the sample population. After adjustment for factors such as smoking and age, vegetarians were the only diet group with an elevated risk of hip fracture.
This study is one of very few studies to compare risk of hip fracture in vegetarians and meat-eaters where the occurrence of hip fracture was confirmed from hospital records.
The scientists stress the need for more research into the exact causes of why vegetarians were at a greater risk of hip fracture.
Study lead author James Webster, a doctoral researcher from the School of Food Science and Nutrition at Leeds, said: "Our study highlights potential concerns regarding risk of hip fracture in women who have a vegetarian diet. However, it is not warning people to abandon vegetarian diets. As with any diet, it is important to understand personal circumstances and what nutrients are needed for a balanced healthy lifestyle.
"Vegetarian diets can vary widely from person to person and can be healthy or unhealthy, just like diets that include animal products.
"However, it is concerning that vegetarian diets often have lower intakes of nutrients that are linked with bone and muscle health. These types of nutrients generally are more abundant in meat and other animal products than in plants, such as protein, calcium, and other micronutrients.
"Low intake of these nutrients can lead to lower bone mineral density and muscle mass, which can make you more susceptible to hip fracture risk. This makes it especially important for further research to better understand factors driving the increased risk in vegetarians, whether it be particular nutrient deficiencies or weight management, so that we can help people to make healthy choices."
