๐Ÿช”๐Ÿ™ FAST WITH FAITH. FAST WITH CARE.

Can people with diabetes observe religious fasts?

The answer depends on their health, diabetes control, medications and the type of fast.

Fasting can be part of our cherished traditions, but it should never come at the cost of health. โค๏ธ

The RSSDI Religious & Ritual Fasting Recommendations highlight five essential principles:

๐ŸŸข KNOW YOUR RISK โ€” Not everyone with diabetes can fast safely.

๐Ÿฉธ MONITOR YOUR GLUCOSE โ€” Even during religious fasting.

๐Ÿ’Š REVIEW YOUR MEDICINES โ€” Insulin and certain diabetes medicines may need adjustment by your doctor.

๐Ÿฅ— CHOOSE SMART FASTING FOODS โ€” Right food, right portion, right preparation.

๐Ÿšจ KNOW WHEN TO STOP โ€” Never ignore weakness, dizziness, excessive thirst, vomiting or other warning symptoms.

โœจ The message is simple:
RIGHT FOOD โ€ข RIGHT PORTION โ€ข RIGHT PREPARATION โ€ข RIGHT MONITORING โ€ข SAFETY FIRST

Your Waistline May Tell a Different Story Than Your Weight.

The number on the weighing scale doesnโ€™t always tell the whole story. โš–๏ธ

Two people can have the same weight or BMI but carry body fat differentlyโ€”and excess abdominal fat can be associated with a higher risk of metabolic health problems, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Thatโ€™s why looking beyond weight matters. Waist circumference can provide another useful measure of metabolic risk, alongside BMI, blood glucose, blood pressure and other health indicators.

Your health is more than just a number on the scale. ๐Ÿ’™

Diabetes in Young Adults: Why Are We Seeing It Earlier?

Diabetes is no longer a condition we associate only with older age. Increasingly, young adults are being diagnosed with diabetes, making early awareness and risk assessment more important than ever.

So, what is driving this shift? From family history and insulin resistance to physical inactivity, excess weight and other metabolic risk factors, several factors can contribute to an earlier onset of type 2 diabetes.

Recognising risk early can open the door to timely screening, prevention and better long-term diabetes care.

Swipe through to understand why diabetes is appearing earlierโ€”and what we can do about it.

โš–๏ธ Is Diabetes Care Becoming Weight-Centric?

Diabetes management has traditionally focused heavily on blood glucoseโ€”but today, the conversation is expanding.

For people with Type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity, weight management is increasingly recognised as an important treatment goal alongside glycaemic management. Evidence shows that even modest weight loss can improve blood glucose and other cardiovascular risk factors, while greater sustained weight loss may offer additional metabolic benefits.

But weight-centric care is not about a number on the weighing scale alone. It means looking at the whole person and choosing an individualised approach that may include:

๐Ÿฅ— Nutrition
๐Ÿƒ Physical activity
๐Ÿง  Behavioural support
๐Ÿ’Š Appropriate medications
๐Ÿฉบ Regular monitoring
๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ Personalised clinical care

The goal is not simply to lose weightโ€”it is to improve metabolic health, reduce complications and support better long-term outcomes.

Diabetes care is evolving. Is it time we looked beyond blood sugar?
