In a significant transcontinental rescue effort, Indian industrialist Anant Ambani has proposed to relocate 80 hippopotamuses from Colombia to India to save them from a planned culling. The hippos, descendants of those brought by drug lord Pablo Escobar in the 1980s, are classified as an invasive species in Colombia, and 80 of them were recently marked for lethal removal due to environmental and safety concerns.

Tulsi Gowda, known as India’s Tree Goddess, is an inspiring symbol of dedication and love for nature. Born into the Halakki tribal community in Karnataka, she lost her father when she was just two years old. Despite never learning to read or write, she began working barefoot with her mother in a forest nursery at a young age to support her family.

Over the next six decades, Tulsi Gowda planted more than 30,000 trees and helped care for nearly 100,000 trees across Karnataka. Without any formal education, she became an expert in over 300 plant species and earned the titles Encyclopedia of the Forest and Tree Goddess. Her extraordinary contribution to nature and environmental conservation made her one of India’s most respected environmentalists.

In 2020, she was honoured with the Padma Shri award, which she received barefoot, touching hearts across the country. Tulsi Gowda passed away in December 2024 at the age of 86, but her legacy continues to live through the forests she created and protected. Her life remains a powerful inspiration for future generations to care for the environment.
