🍿 Before popcorn came in a microwave pouch… we had THIS!
That humble popcorn sold by our local hawkers is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, simple really is enough. ❤️
Traditionally, the corn is popped using hot salt or hot sand, without adding oil directly for popping. The result? Plain, crunchy popcorn that can be a simple snack when portions and salt are kept in check.
Compare that with many ready-to-cook microwave popcorns: the popcorn itself isn’t the problem — it’s the added fat/oil and flavouring ingredients that can make the calorie and fat content much higher.
And the difference can add up:
Per ~30 g popcorn:
🌽 Traditional plain popcorn → ~116 kcal | ~1.4 g fat
🍿 ACT II Original microwave popcorn → ~151 kcal | ~8.4 g fat
The point isn’t that packaged popcorn is “bad” — check the label and choose accordingly.
And somewhere along the way, we started believing that convenient = better and that everything Western = modern. 🤷🏻♀️
Maybe we just need to rediscover what was already around us. 🌾
Eat local. Eat seasonal. Eat simple.
Our traditional foods don’t always need a makeover. ❤️
