Should We Pause New Infrastructure Until We Plan Sustainably?

One lesson I took away from my advanced studies in Sustainable Engineering and Smart Cities at IISc is this:

Perhaps every non-emergency infrastructure project should undergo a temporary pause until an integrated, science-based regional sustainability blueprint is in place.

Looking at Mumbai, Raigad and many parts of India during recent extreme rains, cities, townships and villages now seem equally vulnerable.

Roads, buildings, drainage, rivers, forests, wetlands, transport, housing, water supply, agriculture and waste management are too often planned in isolation. The result is fragmented development that can amplify floods, water scarcity, heat stress, landslides, biodiversity loss and disaster risks.

Emergency and essential public safety works should, of course, continue without delay.

The cost of pausing to plan is far lower than the cost of repeatedly rebuilding after floods and climate-related disasters.

Sustainability is not about stopping development.
It is about making development intelligent enough to survive.
