Topical steroids is incredibly useful in skin practice —but when misused (especially on the face), they can quietly wreck the skin barrier and create long-term damage.

🔬 How steroids harm facial skin

1. Skin thinning (atrophy)
Steroids slow down collagen production → skin becomes thin, fragile, almost “transparent.”
👉 You start seeing veins more clearly.

2. Steroid acne
They trigger sudden, uniform breakouts (monomorphic acne).
👉 Looks different from typical acne—more stubborn.

3. Redness & burning (steroid rosacea)
Prolonged use → persistent redness, flushing, burning sensation.
👉 Skin becomes hypersensitive to heat, sun, even skincare.

4. Pigmentation issues
Can cause both hypopigmentation (light patches) and rebound hyperpigmentation after stopping.

5. Perioral dermatitis
Small red bumps around mouth, nose, eyes after stopping steroids.
👉 Patients often mistake it for acne and worsen it.

6. Visible blood vessels (telangiectasia)
Skin gets so thin that tiny vessels become prominent.

7. Addiction & rebound flare
The most dangerous part ⚠️
👉 Skin becomes “dependent” → stops steroid = flare worse than before.

Never use steroid creams on face without prescription
Avoid combination creams (steroid + antifungal + antibiotic)
If already using → don’t stop abruptly, taper under guidance
