🍬 Sugar Intake for Children: What Parents Should Know

🧠 1. Why it matters

Too much sugar can lead to:
Childhood obesity
Type 2 diabetes (now rising in kids)
Tooth decay
Poor concentration and mood swings
Increased risk of lifestyle diseases later in life

Children’s taste buds adapt early — so limiting sugar from a young age helps build lifelong healthy eating habits.

⚖️ 2. Recommended daily sugar limits

According to the World Health Organization (WHO):

Age group Recommended added sugar limit

Under 2 years ❌ No added sugar at all
2–18 years 🧁 Less than 25 grams/day (≈ 6 teaspoons)

👉 Added sugar means sugar added to foods and drinks — not the natural sugar found in fruits, milk, or vegetables.

🍭 3. Hidden sources of sugar

Many children consume excess sugar without realizing it. Watch out for:

Packaged juices and soft drinks
Flavored yogurts and milkshakes
Biscuits, chocolates, candies
Bakery foods (cakes, pastries, donuts)
