She had been living with the belief for 22 years that she had a son.
She worried about him, loved him, waited for him, and spoke about him with the affection only a mother can have.
Today, she sat in front of me with tears in her eyes.
“My son has gone somewhere… I can’t find him.”
To everyone else, he never existed.
But to her, he was real.
His presence was real.
And now, so is the grief of losing him.
Psychosis doesn’t just create false beliefs.
Sometimes, it creates relationships, memories, and emotions that feel as real as life itself.
As psychiatrists, we don’t treat “crazy thoughts.”
We care for human beings whose pain is real—even when the world they are suffering in is not.
Behind every delusion is a person who deserves compassion, not judgment.
