5 Common Questions About Suprascapular Nerve Block
When we talk about suprascapular nerve block, these are probably the five questions I get asked most often:
1. Which shoulder conditions can benefit from a suprascapular nerve block?
It can be useful in selected patients with chronic shoulder pain, including rotator cuff problems, adhesive capsulitis, osteoarthritis and persistent post-operative pain.
2. Where exactly do you block the nerve?
The suprascapular nerve can be targeted at different points along its course. A commonly used approach is around the suprascapular notch, where the nerve can be identified with ultrasound.
3. Why use ultrasound?
Because we are not simply looking for a landmark—we want to see the nerve, the surrounding structures and the needle in real time. This helps improve precision and avoid important structures such as the suprascapular vessels.
4. What do you inject?
The choice depends on the indication and the purpose of the block. Local anaesthetic may be used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, with or without corticosteroid depending on the clinical situation.
5. Is the procedure completely risk-free?
No injection is completely risk-free. Bleeding, infection, transient nerve irritation or injury are possible, and pneumothorax is a rare but important complication depending on the approach and needle trajectory.
For me, the important part is not just knowing where to put the needle. It is understanding the sonoanatomy, knowing the variations, identifying the vessels and keeping the needle tip visible throughout the procedure.
This is where proper ultrasound training makes a difference.
