WORLD ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS DAY ( 2nd May, 2026)

From the Desk of a Physiatrist (Pain & Rehabilitation Specialist)
“Move Better. Live Stronger. Fight Stiffness.”

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)?
A chronic inflammatory condition that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility over time. It may also affect other joints like knees, hips , shoulders and joints of the chest wall.

🔍 Recognize the Signs Early
-Persistent lower back pain (especially before age 40)
-Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
-Pain improving with activity, worsening with rest
-Fatigue and reduced flexibility

💡 Why Early Rehabilitation Matters
As a Physiatrist, my goal is not just to treat pain—but to restore function, mobility, and independence.
Earlier Detection ➡️ Earlier initiation of treatment ➡️ Faster recovery ➡️ Lesser Complications
🏃‍♂️ Your Movement is Medicine 🏃‍♀️
Under supervision of a Physiatrist:
-Daily Exercise: Stretching & posture training
-Spine Mobility Workouts
-Breathing Exercises to maintain chest expansion
-Ergonomic Corrections at work & home

🤝 Multidisciplinary Care is Key
-Medications
-Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation
-Lifestyle Modifications
-Patient Education & Support

🌱 Live Beyond Limitations
With the right care plan, individuals with AS can:
✔ Maintain an active lifestyle
✔ Prevent deformities
✔ Improve quality of life

📣 On This World AS Day
Let’s raise awareness, encourage early diagnosis, and empower patients through movement and rehabilitation.
“Don’t let stiffness define your life—
Reclaim your movement, reclaim your future.”

*NATIONAL IMMUNISATION WEEK (24-30th APRIL)*

As a Physiatrist, I focus on reducing pain and restoring function—but the best strategy is PREVENTING disability before it begins.

🌟 WHY VACCINATION MATTERS??

🛡️ *Prevents Disability*
Avoids conditions like paralysis, neurological deficits, and long-term complications.
👩‍⚕️ *Protects High-Risk Patients*
Stroke survivors, spinal cord injury patients, and those with chronic illness are more vulnerable.
🏃 *Supports Recovery & Independence*
Fewer infections = uninterrupted rehabilitation and better outcomes.
🌍 *Builds Community Immunity*
Protects those who cannot be vaccinated.

🧠 * PREVENTION + REHABILITATION = HOLISTIC CARE*
Vaccination is not separate from rehab—it is essential to preserving mobility, function, and quality of life.

📢 Call to Action
✔ Stay up to date with vaccines
✔ Educate patients & caregivers
✔ Promote preventive healthcare

💬 *KEY MESSAGE*
“The best rehabilitation is preventing the need for it.”
