Historic First at GMC Handwara : Pediatrician Saves Teen in Life-Staking Procedure

HANDWARA – In a significant milestone for healthcare in the region, Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara has recorded its first successful emergency Intercostal Tube (ICT) drainage on a critical pediatric patient. The life-saving intervention, performed under challenging conditions, is being hailed as a major breakthrough for the institution.
The Critical Intervention
The patient, a 15-year-old, was admitted to the facility four days ago in a state of acute respiratory distress. Medical examinations revealed a massive left-sided pleural effusion—a severe accumulation of fluid in the space surrounding the lungs.
With the patient unable to maintain oxygen saturation on room air, the situation was deemed life-threatening. Facing limited resources but a critical window for action, Dr. Tahir Mohidine Dar, a specialist (MD Pediatrics, SKIMS Srinagar) currently serving at GMC Handwara, performed the delicate procedure.
Successful Outcome
During the procedure, Dr. Tahir successfully placed an ICT drainage tube, resulting in the immediate removal of 3 liters of fluid from the patient’s chest cavity. The impact was instantaneous:
Respiratory Stability: The patient's breathing stabilized immediately post-drainage.
Recovery: The patient is now breathing comfortably and remains under observation.
Institutional Milestone: This marks the first time such a high-stakes thoracic procedure has been performed at GMC Handwara.

The successful operation has sparked a wave of gratitude from the patient’s family and the local community, who praised Dr. Tahir’s expertise and timely intervention. This achievement highlights the growing clinical capabilities of GMC Handwara and the dedication of its medical staff to providing high-level emergency care.
