👣 Diabetic Foot Care: Prevention is Better Than a Cure!
🩺 Healthy Feet, Healthy Life: Essential Tips for Diabetic Patients
For individuals living with diabetes, small foot injuries can quickly escalate into serious complications. High blood sugar can cause nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor blood circulation, making it harder for your feet to heal.
As a plastic surgeon, I often treat complex wounds that could have been entirely prevented with the right daily habits.
Here are 5 essential preventive measures you should start today to protect your feet:
1️⃣ Inspect Your Feet Daily: Check your feet every single day for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or nail problems. Use a mirror to look at the bottoms of your feet if needed!
2️⃣ Never Walk Barefoot: Always wear shoes or slippers, even indoors. A tiny scratch or a stepped-on object can go unnoticed due to reduced sensation and lead to a non-healing ulcer.
3️⃣ Keep Them Clean & Dry: Wash your feet daily in lukewarm water using mild soap. Make sure to dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections.
4️⃣ Choose the Right Footwear: Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with clean, dry socks. Avoid tight footwear that pinches or causes friction.
5️⃣ Trim Nails Carefully: Cut your toenails straight across and smooth the edges with an emery board. Avoid cutting the corners deeply to prevent ingrown toenails.
💡 When to see a doctor? If you notice an ulcer, blister, or wound that doesn't heal within a few days, do not ignore it. Timely medical evaluation by a specialist is crucial to prevent long-term damage.
