Understanding the Real Picture

📊 Yes, cancer cases per lakh population have increased over the last 50 years

Then (1970s):

Now (2020s):

Yes, the idea that breast oncoplastic surgery is always very expensive is largely a myth.
In most cases, oncoplastic surgery is not significantly costlier than standard breast cancer surgery — and sometimes it may even reduce future expenses.

1. Often similar cost to standard breast-conserving surgery

Oncoplasty uses the patient’s own breast tissue to reshape the breast immediately after tumor removal.
Since no implants or major additional materials are required, the cost difference is usually minimal.

2. Prevents costly corrective surgeries later

Standard lumpectomies can sometimes leave dents or contour defects.
Oncoplasty prevents these issues upfront, which avoids the need for secondary corrective surgeries — saving money in the long run.

I had the privilege of attending UPASICON 2025 in Kanpur, where I presented a video on Therapeutic Mammoplasty. I am humbled and encouraged by how well it was received by colleagues and seniors alike.

It was a pleasure reconnecting with friends, learning from respected mentors, and engaging with so many enthusiastic surgeons who are committed to advancing patient care.

My sincere thanks to the organizing committee for their excellent arrangements and for hosting a truly enriching academic meeting.

Experiences like these reinforce my commitment to contributing actively to surgical education. I look forward to participating more regularly in such conferences and continuing my efforts to promote and teach Breast Oncoplasty to general surgeons across the region.
