Stopping blood pressure (BP) medication without consulting a doctor is dangerous and strongly advised against, even if your blood pressure readings appear to be in a normal range. The medication is likely working to keep your blood pressure stable, and quitting suddenly can cause severe health complications.
In a significant percent of patient blood preesure may shootup to original levels and beyond. This can potentially lead to many catastrophic , life threatening
and disabling complications, including but not limited to:
1. Rupture of intra craneal aneurysms leading to brain hemorrhage.
2. Heart attack due to rupture of cholesterol blocks (atherosclerotic plaques) in coronary arteries.
3. Stroke due to ruptue of cholesterol
blocks in brain arteries.
4. Worsening of heart pumping leading to heart failure in predisposed patients.
5. Worsening of kidney function (renal failure) in predisposed patients.
6. Dissection of aorta, The main vessel of the body splits internally in 2 layers.
Life is a one way street there is no going back. Life is not a game of cards, where once you lose, u restart the game. Avoid taking unnecessory risks.
Not every one who stops the meds would develop the complication. The chances of complications are higher if you had long standing BP, severe elevation of BP, if you were on multiple medications .
Effect of medicines may not wear off immediately, so normal BP for a few days or weeks after stopping medicines is no garuntee that you are safe.
