Manual vs product based exfoliation. Which is better?

Regular exfoliation maintains skin health by shedding dead cells and unclogging pores.

But there is a fine line between exfoliation and skin damage. Choosing the correct exfoliation method and frequency is the key to maintaining skin texture.

Product based - AHA, BHA, PHA based products

Face washes - once daily or alternate day
Creams - daily or weekly thrice depending upon strength
Home peels - once in 1 - 2 weeks
Professional peels in clinic - once a month.

Manual exfoliation - face washes with particles, brushes, loofah, devices
Should be avoided as there is uneven exfoliation, no depth control, irritation and skin damage.

Get guidance from dermatologist for suitable products based on your skin type and how often to use it.

Dermatologist rate methods to reduce open pores.

Pores cannot be closed/shrunk permanently as they are the opening of oil glands and are essential to skin health.

Some pore reducing methods work well in maintaining pores small and reduce oil secretion.

Watch the video to know the benefit of different methods like pore strips, serums, facials, peels and laser.

Most people with visible skin diseases suffer from more than just the disease.

They endure comments, unsolicited advice, looks, stares, limitations in dressing to hide rashes, fear or isolation, stigma, losing chances of employment, marriage and such.

The job of a dermatologist doesn't start or end with a prescription to the skin disease

It starts with understanding your struggle and ends with empowering you and your family along with an appropriate solution.

Most skin rashes are not contagious and have no change of spreading to others.

Even in skin diseases that can spread, it's rarely by just a casual touch. It requires prolonged personal contact so mostly family members are at risk. They can easily clarify this with their dermatologist.

Avoid adding to the burden of someone struggling with a problem by stigmatizing them.

Comment ❤️ to send support to someone with invisible struggle and a visible skin disease.

What is the connection between sunscreen and hormones?

Hormone disruptors are substances that mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s natural hormones.

They are present everywhere - the personal products we use, cleaning liquids, pesticide residue in food and water, plastics, non stick cookware etc.

With respect to sunscreens, research has shown two potential disruptors - benzones - avo and oxybenzones and cinnamates. They have the capacity to disrupt hormone signals when tested.

But sunscreens do not get absorbed through the skin a lot. So the minimal absorption,if at all, causes a very tiny dose in our body. Whether this is capable of messing hormones in reality is yet to be conclusively proven.

We do get far higher levels of other hormone disruptors in our blood through vegetables and fruits with certain pesticides, plastic usage and other sources.

Still to be on the safer side if you want to avoid sunscreens containing these ingredients, look for:
1. Sunscreens with newer filters like tinosorb, uvinul, and bemotrizinol
2. Physical sunscreens especially in vulnerable age groups like early teens, pregnancy, and breastfeeding
