World Mental Health Day,10 October 2025
Mental health in humanitarian emergencies

World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that there is no health without mental health. This year’s campaign focuses on the urgent need to support the mental health and psychosocial needs of people affected by humanitarian emergencies.

Crises such as natural disasters, conflicts, and public health emergencies cause emotional distress, with one in five individuals experiencing a mental health condition. Supporting the mental well-being of individuals during such crises is not just important – it saves lives, gives people the strength to cope, the space to heal and to recover and rebuild not only as individuals but as communities. That’s why it is essential for everyone, including government officials, health and social care providers, school staff and community groups to come together. By working hand in hand, we can ensure the most vulnerable have access to the support they need while protecting the well-being of everyone.

By investing in evidence and community-based interventions, we can address immediate mental health needs, foster long-term recovery, and empower people and communities to rebuild their lives and thrive.

On this World Mental Health Day, let us intensify our efforts to create a world where mental health is valued, protected, and accessible for all, especially in the face of adversity.

"Awareness Program on Mental Health, Stress Management, and Drug Abuse"

An awareness workshop focusing on the impact of drug abuse on youth and the importance of stress management was recently conducted by Dr. Thunga’s Manaswini Hospital, Arkula, Mangaluru, in collaboration with Chengala Gram Panchayat, Kasaragod, Kerala.

Mrs. Shashikala B, Counsellor and Coordinator for Community and Educational Services at Manaswini Hospital, stressed the importance of prioritizing mental health. She explained how issues like anxiety, depression, and emotional struggles affect daily life, and emphasized the need for timely professional help.

The session also introduced practical stress management techniques, including meditation, regular physical exercise, maintaining healthy sleep patterns, and building positive relationships. Participants were encouraged to practice healthy coping mechanisms instead of resorting to harmful behaviors.

A key highlight of the program was the discussion on the dangers of drug abuse. Real-life examples and statistics were shared to highlight the serious risks of addiction.

The program concluded with an interactive session, where participants raised questions and received practical tips on stress management and mental well-being.

This initiative was successfully arranged with the support of Chengala Gram Panchayat Secretary Jison, Health and Education Standing Committee member Saleem Yedaneer, along with the enthusiastic participation of students from St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangalore and the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore.
