7 Essential Monsoon Health Tips To Safeguard You This Monsoon
1. Follow a healthy diet.
• This is the season where the body and especially the digestive system are most prone to infections.
• Diseases in the rainy season are mostly water-borne so make sure you only drink water that is filtered or boiled.
• It is also important to maintain a healthy diet in rainy season, which means that your favourite chaat, juices, golas, kulfis and other street food are off the menu.
• Preferably avoid raw vegetables and salads unless they are consumed at home where you can wash and clean them thoroughly.
2. Drink enough water, regardless of your activity levels.
• Do not compensate your liquid intake with carbonated, caffeinated, and alcoholic drinks and beverages as the preservatives and sugars in them act as diuretics.
• Herbal teas with antibacterial properties are a good idea.
3. Avoid walking in the rain.
• As much as it is tempting, walking in rain water makes you prone to a host of viral diseases such as leptospirosis and can also cause numerous fungal infections at the feet and nails.
• Also, if your feet get wet, dry them immediately and do not stay in wet socks or shoes.
• Diabetics especially must take extra care and avoid walking barefoot as the ground is rife with all kinds of germs.
• If your clothes get wet, do not sit in an AC environment or change them immediately.
• Keeping an extra pair of clothes and footwear in the office is a good idea.

4. Keep clear of damp indoors:

Damp walls are home to fungus growth and an absolute no-no if you suffer from asthma or any other breathing problems.
5. Don’t leave home without a mosquito repellent:
• Accumulated water is a breeding ground for insects and the monsoons are party time for malaria.
• Always wear or carry a mosquito repellent.
• The over cautious can take a dose of anti-malaria drugs.
6. Bathe twice a day.
• A shower as soon as you reach home in the evening will insulate you against infections caused by the build-up of sweat and dirt due to humidity.
• Take Vitamin C to boost your immunity.
7. Avoid touching your eyes:
• Eye infections like conjunctivitis, stye, dry eyes and corneal ulcers are common during the monsoons.
• This can lead to blindness if ignored. Refrain from touching eyes especially with dirty hands. those who spend long hours in front of a screen – television or computer – may also experience redness, itching or irritation.
• Consult a doctor immediately.

It's important to prevent mosquitoes from breeding both inside and outside your home.

Inside the home, disease-causing mosquitoes commonly breed in ornamental and other containers, plant pot trays and plates, and canvas sheets/plastic sheets. Outside the home, mosquitoes can breed in perimeter drains, gully traps and discarded containers.

“It’s important to take precautions inside and outside your home to prevent mosquito breeding and contribute to dengue prevention,” says Dr Chua Ying Ying, Associate Consultant, Department of Infectious Diseases, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group.

You can take the following precautions to protect your home from mosquitoes:

Daily

Use insecticide sprays in dark corners (under the bed, sofa and behind curtains) and burn repellent oils inside your home
Turn over all water storage containers when empty and store them under a shelter
Cover bamboo pole holders when not in use
Loosen soil in potted plants to prevent accumulation of stagnant water on surface
Alternate days

Change water in vases/bowls
Remove water from flower/plant pot plates
Weekly

Clear fallen leaves and stagnant water in scupper drains and in the garden
Clear any stagnant water in air cooler units
Monthly

Clear fallen leaves and other blockages in roof gutters
Use sand granular insecticide in gully traps and roof gutters
5-step mozzie wipe-out

NEA has developed a “10-minute 5-step Mozzie Wipe-out” routine to keep homes free of the Aedes mosquito. The 5 steps are:

Change water in vases/bowls on alternate days.
Turn over all water storage containers.
Remove water from flower pot plates on alternate days.
Cover bamboo pole holders when not in use.
Clear blockages and put BTI insecticide in roof gutters monthly.
Dengue colour-coded alert system

To protect yourself and your family from dengue fever and severe dengue, you should familiarise yourself with NEA’s dengue colour-coded alert system. This system uses colour-coded banners (yellow, red, or green) to indicate an active dengue cluster and the preventive measures residents can take.

Alert Red: More than 10 cases in your neighbourhood.

Precautions to take: Do the mozzie wipe-out every alternate day; apply repellent and keep your arms and legs covered; spray insecticide in dark corners in your home.

Alert Yellow: Less than 10 cases in your neighbourhood.

Precautions to take: Do the mozzie wipeout once a week; apply repellent and cover your arms and legs; spray insecticide in dark corners in your home.

Alert Green: Remain vigilant.

Precautions to take: Do the mozzie wipe-out once a week; spray insecticide in dark corners in your home

How you can protect yourself and your home from the Aedes mosquito and dengue fever.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that is widespread in Singapore and other tropical countries. It is caused by the dengue virus and is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.

Dengue fever symptoms include a fever, intense headache, body aches, joint pains, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes and mucosal bleeding. There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, but adequate fluid intake and bed rest is important. Most patients recover within two weeks.

However, dengue fever can turn severe, leading to dengue haemorrhagic syndrome and dengue shock syndrome.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2009 case classification, dengue is classified into dengue without warning signs, dengue with warning signs and severe dengue. It is important to recognise the warning signs such as abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, mucosal bleeding, lethargy and fluid accumulation as it may progress to severe dengue. Even dengue patients without warning signs can develop severe dengue. Dengue fever with warning signs and severe dengue require aggressive emergency treatment and hospitalisation.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) is spearheading the fight against dengue fever in Singapore by raising public awareness about mosquito breeding and destroying existing breeding sites.

“As an individual, you can play your part in the fight against dengue fever by protecting yourself and your home environment from the Aedes mosquito,” says Dr Chua Ying Ying, Associate Consultant, Department of Infectious Diseases, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group.

How to protect yourself from getting dengue fever

You can protect yourself against dengue fever by taking the following precautions:

Protect yourself against mosquito bites
Prevent mosquito breeding inside and outside your home
Avoid visiting areas prone to mosquitoes
If you live in a neighbourhood identified as a dengue cluster*, or if you are visiting a dengue cluster or a mosquito-prone area, heed the following advice:

1. Apply mosquito repellent, ideally one containing DEET.

Apply it to exposed skin and/or clothing, using enough to cover the entire area. Do not apply it under clothing.
Do not apply it on cuts, wounds or irritated skin.
Do not apply it near the eyes or mouth, and apply sparingly around ears.
When using sprays, never spray directly on the face. Spray it on your hands first and then apply it to your face. Wash your hands afterwards.
Do not allow children to handle a repellent. When using it on children, apply it to your own hands first and then put it on the child. Avoid applying it to children’s hands.
Do not use an insect repellent for infants under two months of age.
2. Wear long-sleeves and long pants to cover your arms and legs.

3. Use mosquito nets while sleeping.

“If you or your child gets a rash or any other negative reaction from an insect repellent, wash it off with mild soap and water and stop using the product. Consult a doctor if the condition persists,” says Dr Chua Ying Ying.

* A dengue cluster is formed when 2 or more dengue cases occur within 14 days and the homes of the dengue victims are within the distance of 150m.
