Losing weight without dieting or exercise? Please don't celebrate — get checked.

I've had patients come in after losing 5–6 kgs in a couple of months, and their first reaction was: "Accha hi hua, Doctor." (It's a good thing, Doctor.)

Unintentional weight loss is one of the most important red flags in gastroenterology. It can be linked to GI cancers, liver disease, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel conditions, or even an overactive infection.

Your body does not lose weight without reason.

⚠️ Take it seriously if weight loss comes with:
• Loss of appetite that isn't improving
• Persistent tiredness or weakness
• Changes in stool — colour, frequency, or consistency
• Any abdominal discomfort lasting more than 2–3 weeks

💡 Why acting early matters:
✔ Early-stage GI cancers are highly treatable
✔ A simple endoscopy and blood panel can identify the cause quickly
✔ Do not dismiss it as "stress," "travel," or "getting older"

As a doctor, what I see too often is patients who come late — not because they didn't notice, but because they didn't think it was serious.

Loose motions one day. Constipation the next. Cramps in between. Your gut is not confused — it's trying to tell you something.

This pattern has a name: IBS — Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

In my practice, I meet patients who have lived with this for years, often told it is "just stress" or "weak digestion." They've tried every home remedy. Changed their diet five times. And still their gut is unpredictable.

IBS is real. It is diagnosable. And most importantly — it is manageable.

🔴 Latrine mein khoon dekha — aur ignore kar diya. Yeh galti mat karo.

I want to talk about something that most people feel too embarrassed to discuss — even with their doctor. Blood in stool.

The most common assumption is: "Bawaseer hogi." (It must be piles.) And sometimes it is. But as a gastroenterologist, I've seen cases where that assumption delayed a diagnosis that could have been treated much earlier.

Blood in stool can come from piles — but also from ulcers, colitis, polyps, and in some cases, colon cancer. You cannot know without an evaluation.

⚠️ Don't ignore it if:
• Bright red blood appears on tissue or in the toilet
• Stools are dark, black, or tarry
• Bleeding comes with pain, weight loss, or weakness
• It keeps returning even after piles treatment

💡 What to do:
✔ Do not self-medicate for more than a week
✔ A colonoscopy finds the exact source safely
✔ Early findings mean simpler, more effective treatment

There is no shame in getting checked. There is only risk in waiting.

🟡 No alcohol. No symptoms. But fatty liver on your ultrasound — how?

I see this almost every week. A patient comes in with a routine ultrasound showing Grade 1 or 2 fatty liver — and they're shocked. "But Doctor, I don't drink at all."

And that's exactly the point.

NAFLD — Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease — is silently becoming one of the most common liver conditions in Punjab and across North India. Excess sugar, maida, ghee-heavy meals, and a sedentary lifestyle are now the real culprits.

⚠️ Watch for these signs:
• Fatigue without reason
• Mild discomfort under the right rib
• Elevated liver enzymes on blood report
• Fatty liver Grade 1/2 on ultrasound

💡 The good news — it is reversible:
✔ Cut down sugar and refined carbs
✔ Walk 30 minutes daily
✔ Monitor your liver function tests regularly

Your liver works silently. Protect it before it asks for help.
