🧠 Why is a part of the skull removed during brain surgery?

Sometimes, after a severe brain injury, stroke, or brain haemorrhage, the brain swells dangerously. Since the skull is a rigid bone, there is no room for the swollen brain to expand.

To reduce this life-threatening pressure, neurosurgeons may temporarily remove a small part of the skull. This procedure, called Decompressive Craniectomy, gives the brain space to swell safely and helps prevent further damage.
