Autism does not always look the way you expect it to. Here is what to gently watch for.
In young children
Avoiding eye contact or not responding to their name
Speech delays or suddenly going quiet after talking
Not pointing at things or waving goodbye
In behaviour
Repeating the same words, actions or routines
Getting overwhelmed by sounds, lights or textures
Very intense focus on one specific interest
In social situations
Difficulty understanding how others feel
Taking things too literally, missing jokes or sarcasm
Struggling to make or keep friendships
In older children and adults
Symptoms can be hidden really well
Many women and girls are diagnosed much later in life
Early awareness changes everything. If something feels off, trust your gut and speak to a doctor.
