Groundbreaking research shows the heart can naturally construct its own bypasses after a heart attack.

Experts say this opens the door to revolutionary treatments that could supercharge this self-healing process.

When a heart attack strikes, a blocked artery cuts off vital oxygen and nutrients, causing immediate tissue damage. While the heart has always been known to attempt self-repair by expanding other blood vessels, these efforts are typically too slow to prevent permanent scarring or death.

However, a pioneering study published in Science has uncovered a previously hidden emergency mechanism. Led by researchers at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the team discovered that endothelial cells in the body's tiniest capillaries—rather than larger arteries—work to 'upgrade' themselves into fully functioning bypass vessels, mirroring how a newborn's heart naturally develops.

To see if they could accelerate this natural defense system, researchers treated mouse models with short bursts of the blood-vessel-promoting protein VEGF-A. The therapy kicked off a chemical chain reaction that significantly strengthened the newly formed bypasses, resulting in superior blood flow, smaller heart scars, and drastically improved cardiac function. While currently demonstrated in mice, this discovery offers a highly promising therapeutic path for human patients. By artificially boosting the body's built-in repair system immediately after a heart attack, medical professionals may soon be able to minimize long-term cardiac damage and dramatically improve recovery outcomes.
