MenopauseWize

MenopauseWize Hi! Wondering why the latter is a positive thing? Was I going to have brain fog, a belly, wrinkled skin, achy bones, etc etc?

I am Dr. Sukhpreet Patel, and these are some of the positive ways that I like to describe myself: a medical doctor with over 25 years of experience, a lifestyle enthusiast, a mother of two amazing adult children, a perennial student, and a post-menopausal woman. Having practiced as an MD Gynaecologist for a couple of decades, and having understood all the problems associated with menopause, I was

petrified of ‘what lies beyond’ from the day I turned 40. Eventually, when the transition took the form of bothersome symptoms for me at the age of 45, I began my search for non-prescription methods of getting through them. Soon it became apparent to me that I needed to drop the anxiety and start planning for a kickass Sukhpreet 2.0. Considering my decision against the use of hormone replacement for myself, I researched (and continue to research) and applied every bit of lifestyle modification that could contribute to this upgrade. And today, I can confidently say that I feel stronger in every aspect of health (mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual) than I ever did.

Nevertheless, in hindsight, I wish I had spent more time preparing for the inevitable instead of fearing it. NoPausingMe is my attempt to share my experiences and knowledge with women with the goal of making them better equipped for the transition during perimenopause, reducing their struggle during menopause, and working toward an upgraded version of themselves beyond menopause without the use of prescription drugs.

Does hormone therapy increase the risk of death?

This was the question asked by researchers in a large Danish study just published in The BMJ - following nearly 900,000 women over 14 years.
The answer was no.

Women were compared according to how long they had used hormone therapy - and they observed that there was no difference in all-cause mortality.

To be clear about what this does and does not say - it does not tell us that MHT adds years to your life. But it tells us clearly that it does not take them away.

And that matters. Because for two decades, fear around hormone therapy has led countless women to suffer through symptoms unnecessarily, and to miss out on real benefits for their bones, and their quality of life.

But there is a second finding that deserves its own conversation.
Among women who had undergone surgical menopause - both ovaries removed - those who used MHT had a 27 to 34% lower risk of death compared to those who did not.

Surgical menopause is not the same as natural menopause. Estrogen does not gradually decline - it disappears overnight. The consequences for bone, heart, brain, and metabolism are more severe and hit faster.
If you have had your ovaries removed and you are not on hormone therapy, this is worth raising with your doctor.

Will hormone therapy help me lose weight?

It’s one of the most common questions I get, and here is my answer:

MHT is NOT a weight loss treatment.

But it can help with things that make weight management harder:
- Poor sleep
- Hot flashes disrupting your day or night
- Aches and pains that keep you from moving

What actually supports sustainable weight in midlife?
- Nutrition
- Strength training
- Regular movement
- Restorative sleep
- Stress management

MHT can ease some of your symptoms, but it can’t do all the heavy lifting.

And if you do decide to start MHT with your provider? Make sure you’re clear on YOUR why. That clarity matters more than you think.

Have you been wondering about MHT and weight? Drop your question below.

PCOS is getting a new name, and it matters more than you think.

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) affects up to 1 in 8 women, and after years of advocacy, it is officially being renamed PMOS: Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.

The old name was misleading in some sense. It pointed to one organ and implied the issue was simply ovarian cysts. But anyone living with this condition knows it runs so much deeper, touching metabolism, mood, skin and cardiovascular health. The new name finally reflects that.

And to a lot of us, this is bigger than a name change. It is a recognition that ovarian hormones do not just control fertility. They shape our entire health.

This also gives me hope for the future of menopause terminology. Because we know menopause is not just about periods stopping. It affects bone density, brain health, heart health and mental health. It deserves language and care that reflects that too.

Language shapes how conditions are funded, researched and treated. This is such an amazing step in the right direction.

Congratulations to all the amazing researchers who made this happen!
