The Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:

“A man’s status will be raised in Paradise and he will ask, ‘Where did this come from?’ It will be said [to him], ‘From your son’s supplications for [seeking] forgiveness for you.’”

At-Tazkīyyah in Islām is one of the utmost important spiritual aspects of Islām.

What is Tazkīyyah An-Nafs?

Tazkīyyah: Literally means something that increases and to be pure.

Tazkīyyah An-Nafs: Tazkīyyah as it relates to worshippers, means the soul’s purification from sin & all evil diseases of the heart.

Types of Hearts

There are three main types of hearts:

1 - A Sound & Healthy Heart:

A sound and healthy heart is what which is attached to Allāh alone. A person who possesses this heart will do anything for the sake of Allāh alone. A person with true and a sincere heart will:
• Forgive people for the sake of Allāh.
• Control anger and desires for the sake of Allāh.
• Get involved in healthy discussions for the sake of Allāh.
• Be humble and kind with his parents, spouse, children for the sake of Allāh.
• And all other praiseworthy traits.

2 - A Dead Heart:

A dead heart is the opposite of a healthy heart. It does everything to please itself. It is slave of its own desires. If money is what a person with a dead heart desires, then he becomes a slave of money. He does everything and anything for the sake of earning money irrespective of whether it is earned in a ḥalāl or ḥarām way.

3 - A Sick Heart:

A sick heart swings between a healthy and a dead heart. This person has love for Allāh, faith in his heart, sincerity towards his duties but at the same time, also loves his desires and prefers them.

See Lagāthatul Lahfān Fī Maṣāyid Ash-Shayṭān by Imām Ibn Al-Qayyim (d. 751H) رحمه الله for more information.

Supplications to memorise:

اللهُمَّ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِي مِنْ كُلِّ خُلُقٍ لا يُرْضِيْكَ

“O Allāh, purify my heart from every characteristic that is not pleasing to You”

اللهُمَّ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِي مِنَ الغِلِّ والحِقْدِ والحَسَدِ والكِبْرِ
“O Allāh, purify my heart from hatred, resentment, jealousy, and arrogance.”

Qatadah رضي الله عنه said:

"Know that sinning in the sacred months (Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Ḥijjah, Muḥarram and Rajab) is worse than sinning in other than them even though sinning in all circumstances is something not to be taken lightly (grave), except Allāh magnifies from the affairs that which is pleasing to him."

Virtues of the First 10 Days of “Dhul-Hijja”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “There is no deed that is better in the sight of Allah or more greatly rewarded than a good deed done in the (first) ten days of Al-Adha”. It was asked, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for Jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari

Allah blessed the nation of Muhammad ﷺ with opportunities to reap rewards and blessings every day of the year. The last ten nights of Ramadan (the month of fasting) are among the most blessed nights of the year; in particular Laylatul-Qadr (the night of power) is extremely sacred. Similarly, the first ten days of Dhul-Hijja (the 12th Islamic calendar month) carry special status during the blessed month of “Pilgrimage.” The above Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ spells out the importance of these ten days in the sight of Allah and the amplified reward for all good deeds during this blessed season.

Just like the last ten nights of Ramadan are the best ten nights out of the year, these first ten days of Dhul-Hijja are the best days of the year and the most beloved to Allah as they combine acts of worship in a way unlike any other time.

So, the questions we should be asking ourselves are, “How do we make the most of this season of blessings?”, “What deeds can I perform to attain His pleasure?”.

The following are some examples of the acts of worship that will help us gain His pleasure InshaAllah.

1⃣. Perform Hajj (Pilgrimage)

Obviously, Hajj is one of the best deeds that one can do during these ten days. However for those of us who were not invited to His House this year, there are still many more ways to earn the pleasure of Allah.

2⃣. Fast all nine days and especially on the ‘Day of Arafah’

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Anyone who fasts for one day for Allah’s pleasure, Allah will keep his face away from the (Hell) fire for (a distance covered by a journey of) seventy years.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

The Prophet ﷺ used to fast on the ninth day of Dhul-Hijja and he said: “Fasting the Day of ‘Arafah (ninth Dhul-Hijja) is an expiation for (all the sins of) the previous year and expiation for (all the sins of) the coming year.” (Muslim)

3⃣.Perform Dhikr and Takbeer

The Prophet ﷺ said: “There are no days on which good deeds are greater or more beloved to Allah than on these ten days, so recite much Tahleel (saying Laa ilaaha ill-Allah), Takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) and Tahmeed (saying Alhamdu Lillaah).” (Ahmad -Saheeh)

Ibn ‘Umar and Abu Hurayrah used to go out in the marketplace during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijja, reciting Takbeer, and the people would recite Takbeer when they heard them. (Bukhari)

Takbeer at this time is a Sunnah that has mostly been forgotten, especially during the first few days. So say it in the masjid, in your home, on the street and every place where it is permitted to remember Allah. Revive the Sunnah that have been virtually forgotten and earn great rewards for doing so.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward.” (Tirmidhi-Hasan)

4⃣. Stand the Night in Prayer

Seeking Allah’s forgiveness and humbling ourselves in front of Him in supplication and prayers during the latter part of the night is an act of worship that is very beloved to Allah .

Allah Almighty calls out to His servants in the latter part of the night: “Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?” (Bukhaari, Muslim)

We should seize this opportunity and beg Him for His Divine Generosity and Mercy. We should ask Him as our Prophet ﷺ taught us “Our Lord, bless us with the best of this world and the best of hereafter and save us from the torment of the blazing fire.

Ameen

The Man Who Was Abducted by Jinn

ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā reports:

A man from his people, from the Anṣār, went out one night to pray ʿIshāʾ with his people (during the Caliphate of ʿUmar), but some Jinn abducted him, and he went missing. His wife went to ʿUmar and told him (of her missing husband). ʿUmar asked his people about him, and they confirmed that he had gone out to pray ʿIshāʾ but had gone missing. (ʿUmar) told the woman to wait for four years.

When four years had passed, the woman went back to ʿUmar and informed him (of her case). He asked her people and they confirmed the case. He told her she could now marry, and she did. But her (first) husband returned and raised a dispute (over the marriage) to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb – Allāh be pleased with him. ʿUmar said, “One of you disappears for ages, his family does not know whether he is alive or not (and then he turns up, making claims)!” The man replied, “O Leader of the Believers, I have an excuse.” He asked, “And what is your excuse?” The man replied, “I went out to pray ʿIshāʾ one night, but some Jinn captured me, and I (was held captive) by them for a long time. Then, some Muʾmin – or Muslim (one of the reporters, Saʿīd, was not sure of the exact word used) Jinn waged an attack on them, fought them and beat them, and took captives. They took me amongst the captives, but said, ‘We see that you are a Muslim man, and it is not allowed for us to keep you captive.’ So they gave me the choice of staying with them or returning to my family. I chose to return to my family. They set off with me. By night, no one would say anything to me; but by day there would be a stick I would follow.”

ʿUmar – Allāh be pleased with him – asked the man, “What was your food when you were amongst them?” He replied, “Difficult (stolen?) food, and what had not had the name of Allāh mentioned over it.” ʿUmar asked, “And what did you drink when you were amongst them?” He replied, “al-Jadaf (a type of drink that does not ferment).”

ʿUmar ruled that the man had a choice to either get back the Ṣadaq (dowry) he had given (and have his marriage stay nullified), or take back his wife.

Home alone?

Whenever Khulaid Al-‘Asri entered his home, he’d announce:

مَرْحَبًا بِمَلَائِكَةِ رَبِّي أَمَا وَاللَّهِ لَأُشْهِدَنَّكُمُ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ نَفْسِي خَيْرًا خُذُوا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ،

“Welcome O angels of Allah! By Allah, you are going to see goodness from me today, say take note of this: ‘Bismillah, SubhaanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Laa ilaaha ila Allah, Allahu Akbar.’”

He’d continue doing this till he’d fall asleep or make his way to the next prayer.

Use those moments of solitude to draw closer to Allah, and remember that you are under strict surveillance.

Ibn al-Qayyim: What Brings Rizq and What Blocks It

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) said:

Four matters bring Rizq (provision):

1. Standing in the night prayer
2. Frequent seeking of forgiveness in the early dawn hours
3. Giving in charity continuously
4. Remembrance of Allah at the beginning of the day and its end

Four matters prevent Rizq:

1. Sleeping in the early morning
2. Little prayer
3. Laziness
4. Betrayal

THE FIVE TYPES OF CHILDREN

There are 5 types of children in this world:

1. Does not do what his parents order him
(this type is 'aaq - i.e. undutiful/disobedient which is one of the seven majors sins)

2. Does what his parents tell, but is displeased with it (this type does not gain any reward)

3. Does what he is told , but follows it up by raising his voice, or mentioning those favors [e.g. I have done so much for you, I am always doing 'xyz' for you. this type earns a sin)

4. Does what he is told, willingly and happily (this type is rewarded), and they are few.

5. Does what his parents want before he is even told (this is the type which is al-baar al-muwafaq i.e. dutiful and kind to his parents and is given the ability to be successful in all his affairs), and they are rare.

As for the last two types, they are known as Al-Birr (the obedient)

About them, don't ask about the barakah [blessings Allah puts in person's time, wealth, health, efforts etc. whereby it increases, multiplies or a lot of good comes from something little] they will have in their life, and the vast provision (rizq i.e. wealth, knowledge, health etc. Allah gives them); and how much their hearts will be at rest; and the ease they will find in all their affairs [due to being dutiful to their parents].

The difficult question for every person is - what type of child are you?

Don't think that by simply kissing the forehead or hands, or even the feet of your parents, that you have attained their ultimate pleasure..

What is al-Birr (being dutiful and kind towards one's parents)?
.. Al-Birr is to recognize what is in the heart of your parents and act upon it without waiting for an instruction.
..Al-Birr is knowing what makes them happy, then racing towards doing it; and understanding what hurts them, then striving that they don't ever see it from you!
..Al-Birr could be in something that you feel your parents desire, and you bring it to them, even a cup of tea..
..Al-Birr is that you ensure the comfort of your parents, even at the cost of your own happiness; so if your staying out late will cause them worry and stress, then you sleeping early is part of your birr (kindness) towards them.
..Al-Birr is that you miss a party that you are invited to when you feel, even for a second, that your staying out late will cause then worry and stress.
...Al-Birr is to plan a surprise Umrah or Hajj trip for your parents and arranging for them a nice hotel which they deserve!
...Al-Birr is to cheer up your parents - at an age where there does not remain a lot which brings them joy and happiness...
...Al-Birr is to spend abundantly
on your parents from your wealth even if they posses millions, without thinking twice about how much they own or whether they need it; for everything you have is only because of their hard work, and sleepless nights which they spent looking after you..
..Al-birr is to look for their comfort, and not let them exert effort to make you comfortable, for it is enough how much strived for your sake already...

There are many ways of Al-Birr which lead to -Janah (Paradise), so don't restrict it to a single kiss on the forehead which may be followed up by many shortcomings...

و قَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلاَّ تَعْبُدُواْ إِلاَّ إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا

{And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment.} (Quran 17:23).....

MAY ALLAH TA'ALA MAKE ALL OBEDIENT CHILDREN - NO MATTER HOW GROWN UP THEY MAY BECOME. AMEEN

It couldn't even protect itself, so how can it protect you!?O Allah we ask you for the safety of our faith!
