When it comes to blood transfusions, not every safety measure is visible, but that doesn't make it any less important.

Every donor brings hope, and every unit of blood carries the potential to save a life. That's why blood screening plays such a critical role in the transfusion journey. Technologies like Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) help strengthen blood safety by enabling earlier detection of certain infections, adding an extra layer of confidence for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals alike.

Because asking the right questions today can make a meaningful difference tomorrow. Ask for NAT-tested blood.

Every blood transfusion carries a promise of safety. Delivering on that promise requires more than blood availability.

Dr Sangeeta Pathak, Secretary General, Indian Society of Blood Transfusion & Immunohematology (ISBTI), explores the need to modernise India’s blood transfusion system and strengthen patient safety at every stage of the journey. She highlights how advanced technologies such as Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) can help detect infections earlier, while underscoring the importance of stronger supply chains, standardised protocols, workforce development, and data-driven oversight.

As India continues its journey towards healthcare assurance, building a safer and more reliable blood ecosystem must remain a public health priority.

Every safe blood transfusion begins with one generous act: donating blood.

On , Roche Diagnostics India, along with our RIS teams, , organised a blood donation drive that brought together Roche employees and community members in support of a shared cause. With 140+ donors stepping forward to support a shared mission: helping make safer blood more accessible to those who need it most.

At Roche, we believe that access to safer blood is a fundamental patient need. That is why our campaign actively advocates for advanced screening methods like NAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing) ensuring the highest standards of safety for patients when they need it most.

Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and made this initiative possible. Every drop truly makes a difference.

Blood is one of the few medical resources that cannot be manufactured. Especially when it comes to a country like India, where demand outweighs supply [1].

As healthcare systems work to meet the growing demand for transfusions, the importance of a strong voluntary donor base becomes increasingly evident. Equally important is ensuring that every unit collected meets the highest standards of safety before it reaches a patient in need.

Because when it comes to blood transfusions, availability and safety must go hand in hand.

The evolution of blood testing in India is a story of continuous improvement.

Every advancement in blood safety, from better screening methods and stronger policies to digital systems and molecular diagnostics, has had the same objective: making transfusions safer, more reliable, and more accessible for the people who depend on them.

This shows us that progress in healthcare has been measured by lives that continue uninterrupted because the system has become safer over time.

Not every risk is visible to the eye. A blood bag may look completely safe, but infections can still remain undetected during the early stages without advanced screening methods.

That’s why informed questions matter. Technologies like NAT help strengthen blood safety by enabling earlier detection of infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C in donated blood.

When it comes to transfusions, awareness can be just as important as access. Asking whether blood has been NAT-tested is a small question that can support safer outcomes for patients who depend on every unit of blood.

Safe blood starts with informed choices.

We know the importance of safe blood. But for many, timely access to it remains a challenge.
That's why we've worked relentlessly to bridge this gap.

With a network of 100+ NAT-enabled sites across the country, we're not only advancing awareness of NAT blood testing but also helping improve access to safe blood when it matters most.

Because every timely transfusion can make a life-changing difference.

When a unit of donated blood is separated into different components, it can help multiple patients with different medical needs. That’s why ensuring the safety of every donation is so important, because one unsafe unit can impact several lives.
Advanced screening technologies like help detect infections earlier than many conventional methods, helping reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections [4]. By enabling more sensitive blood screening, healthcare systems can strengthen blood safety and help protect patients who rely on every transfusion.

One unit of blood may not seem like a big deal, but for someone fighting a serious illness, recovering from surgery, or facing a medical emergency, it can mean another chance at life. In just 30 minutes [3], your donation has the potential to support up to three patients in need.

A simple act of kindness can keep hearts beating, families hopeful, and lives moving forward. This World Blood Donor Day, take a step towards saving lives, donate blood and make every drop count.
