✨Eyes are described as window to the body as many systemic diseases produce visible changes in the eyes which reflect the patient’s systemic status.
👉Diabetes- It causes significant changes in the small blood vessels of the retina and damage with leaky blood vessels causing diabetic retinopathy.
👉Hypertension- Elevated blood pressure causes damage to the retinal circulation and changes in the blood vessels causing ischemic changes in the retina leading to hypertensive retinopathy.
👉High cholesterol- Dyslipidemia causes a gray white line along the outer edge of cornea called Arcus senilis. It is caused by deposition of lipids. Xanthelesma are yellowish lipid deposits around the eyelids.
👉Thyroid eye disease- Graves disease causes tissue and muscle inflammation around the eyes resulting in bulging of the eyes called proptosis along with redness, dryness, lid retraction.
👉Tuberculosis- TB can affect any organ of the body including eyes. Ocular Tuberculosis can cause granulomas in various tissues of eye like uvea, choroid, retina.
👉Vitamin A deficiency- It can cause xerophthalmia, a condition where conjunctiva and cornea can become dry. Bitot’s spots are classic sign which are foamy, whitish patches on the conjunctiva.
Many other conditions can be diagnosed or monitored through the eyes.
