Modesty is the quality of someone who doesn’t flaunt their talents and achievements. They are quick to correct themselves if in the wrong, and will accept the criticism of others by first seeing if it is true, and if it is then making the necessary change in themselves.
Modesty in accepting the guru’s guidance, by reading his teachings or through asking him questions, will help the devotee to overcome the limiting negative qualities in them and thus enable them to rise in awareness of Lord Shiva’s presence.
The devotee isn’t interested in the righteous of the ego when criticised, condemned or blamed for something true or untrue. They are only concerned with self-improvement. So, whenever the devotee faces any of these things they will be focused on how they are reacting; is it positive, humble and modest? With these kinds of reactions, they will grow in spirituality. With the reactions from the ego that take the form of defensiveness or verbally attacking the other person, the devotee’s spiritual life will not grow and can diminish if this is left out of control.
