Meniscus root tears are typically more common in middle aged women who are slightly overweight or obese.

These tears make the meniscus unstable, so it gets gradually pushed out & the joint develops osteoarthritis very rapidly.

To avoid the difficulties of dealing with arthritis, read more on why it is crucial to get these tears diagnosed & treated at the right time.

Meniscus root tears are called 'the silent epidemic', especially in middle aged women. That is because, as the pain improves initially, these tears tend to go undiagnosed and present directly when the osteoarthritis starts to set in the joint. Hence, in order to avoid challenges of tackling osteoart...

Shoulder Dislocation : Key Facts

👉🏼 Shoulder dislocation is when the ball of the shoulder comes out of its socket completely.

👉🏼 It can occur after a fall, road traffic accident or even during a contact sport

👉🏼 Symptoms include:
• Severe shoulder pain
• Visible deformity
• Inability to move the arm
• Swelling

👉🏼 Urgent care:
Visiting an orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible to get it reduced back into the socket.

Longer the time since dislocation, more difficult it is to reduce without anaesthesia.

👉🏼 When a dislocation happens, it tears off a protective rim around the socket (labrum), called as a ‘Bankart Tear’.

👉🏼 Every successive dislocation erodes the bony socket, ball & makes the shoulder more unstable.

👉🏼 Seeking early treatment and supervised rehabilitation are essential to restore strength and prevent future episodes.

👉🏼 While most of the first-time dislocations can be managed without a surgery, recurrent dislocations require a minimally invasive arthroscopic repair of the Bankart tear.

Bone Marrow Stimulation for Cartilage Damage

- Bone marrow stimulation or Microfracture is a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure used to treat small areas of cartilage damage in the knee joint.

- During surgery, the defective area is cleared off any loose tissue bits & tiny holes are made in the bone beneath the damaged cartilage.

- This releases the bone maarow into the defect. The stem cells present in the marrow form a new repair tissue.

- Although the newly formed tissue is a fibrocartilage as opposed to the original hyaline cartilage, it serves as a better cushion than the bare bone.

- The procedure aims to reduce the constant pain, improve knee function and help patients return to daily activities .

- It is one of the simple procedures for a cartilage lesion with more predictable outcomes than many other fancy options.

Rotator Cuff Tear of Shoulder: A quick guide for patients

✍🏼 What is a Rotator Cuff?
-a group of four important muscles responsible for stability & movements of shoulder joint

✍🏼 How does a tear occur?
-due to slip and fall, road traffic accidents, jerky lifting of heavy weights

✍🏼 What age group is affected?
-typically after 55-60 years of age but smaller tears can occur in middle age group as well

✍🏼 When to suspect a tear?
-persistent shoulder pain, weakness, restrictions in activities of daily living

✍🏼 Does every tear need a surgery?
-No. Most of these tears are small / partial and can be managed with exercises alone.
Only the big / complete tears with shoulder weakness need a repair.

✍🏼 When a surgery is required, how major is it?
-Repair of the torn tendon is performed by Arthroscopy - a key-hole surgical modaility, which is much safer than an open surgery with much less chances of complications.

Bones are the important pillars on which our body rests. Weak pillars make the entire structure fragile.

If the bones are strengthened at the right age, your body will support you in your old age.

Here are some key habits which make up for stronger bones.

Bone health is often ignored until some problem arises, but by then significant damage might have already occurred. Peak bone mass is achieved by the late 20s to early 30s, after which gradual bone loss begins. With modern lifestyle changes such as sedentary work, improper diet and limited sunlight....

Arthroscopy literally means ‘looking inside a joint’.

Its a revolutionary key-hole surgery of joints, which even after three decades of its invention keeps on expanding its reach & indications.

Myth: it’s only for young people & sports persons.
Fact: arthroscopy has a crucial role in managing various joint problems in middle age & older patients as well.

Advantages over traditional open surgery:
- Tiny incisions, tiny scars
- Less tissue damage, less scarring, less joint stiffness
- Less pain after surgery
- Shorter hospital stay
- Much lesser chances of infection & other complications
- Faster recovery

Arthroscopy also provides much better & magnified visualization of the joint, which allows precise diagnosis and treatment.
