For years, we have called it PCOS. But the condition was always much bigger than just ovarian cysts.

Many women with PCOS do not even have cysts. At the same time, the condition affects hormones, insulin resistance, metabolism, weight, skin, hair, mood, sleep, fertility, and overall health.

That is why experts are now moving toward the name PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.

The new name reflects what this condition truly is: a full-body hormonal and metabolic disorder, not just a gynaecological issue.

As a dietitian working with women having PCOS for years, I feel this change matters because better understanding leads to better awareness, earlier diagnosis, and more meaningful lifestyle management.

The name may be changing, but the foundation of management still remains the same:
Nutrition, sleep, stress management, exercise, gut health, and consistency.

PCOS was never just about cysts.
And finally, the name is beginning to reflect that.

Many people think fruit juice is a healthy option for weight loss. But according to Dietician Deepa Nandy, whole fruits and fruit juice affect the body very differently.

Whole fruits contain fibre, water, natural sugars, and important micronutrients. Because of the fibre, the sugar gets absorbed slowly, helping maintain stable blood sugar levels and keeping you full for longer.

Fruit juice works differently. One glass often contains three to four fruits together, creating a high concentration of sugar and calories. This can lead to a rapid blood sugar spike followed by a crash, making you feel hungry again very quickly.

For people trying to lose weight, whole fruits are usually a better option because they support satiety and better appetite control. For people with diabetes, portion size and choosing low glycemic fruits become especially important.

Fruits are not the problem. The way you consume them matters.

Carbohydrates are often blamed for weight gain, but the truth is more balanced.

As Dietician Deepa Nandy explains, carbs are the body’s primary source of energy and should not be avoided completely. The key is choosing the right type and eating them in the right way.

Refined carbohydrates like white bread and sugar get absorbed quickly, causing a spike in blood sugar followed by a sudden drop. This leads to increased hunger and frequent cravings.

On the other hand, whole carbohydrates such as millets, brown rice, whole wheat, oats, and pulses are absorbed slowly. They help maintain steady energy levels, reduce hunger, and support better blood sugar balance.

Another important benefit of whole carbs is fibre. Fibre supports digestion, improves gut health, and helps you stay full for longer.

Carbs are not the enemy. The quality and quantity make the difference.

Protein plays a major role in healthy weight loss, especially for women trying to reduce body fat in a sustainable way.

As Dietician Deepa Nandy explains, protein supports muscle growth and repair. More muscle means a higher metabolic rate because muscles use more energy even when the body is at rest. This helps the body burn fat more efficiently over time.

Protein also improves satiety. It helps you stay full for longer and supports hormones that signal when it is time to stop eating. This reduces frequent hunger and makes overeating less likely.

Another important benefit is blood sugar stability. When meals include enough protein along with carbohydrates, energy remains steadier and sudden hunger is less common.

For women trying to lose weight, protein is not just about gym routines. It is an important part of everyday nutrition and long-term fat loss.

Many people blame themselves for cravings and think it is only about poor self-control. But cravings are often linked to how your body is being nourished.

As Dietician Deepa Nandy explains, one common reason is not eating enough protein. Protein helps you stay full for longer and reduces sudden hunger, which makes cravings easier to manage.

Another major reason is blood sugar fluctuation. When meals are low in fibre, vegetables, and protein, and high in refined carbohydrates or processed foods, blood sugar rises quickly and drops sharply. This sudden fall often triggers cravings.

Micronutrient balance also matters. Low magnesium levels may increase chocolate cravings, while low salt intake can lead to cravings for salty foods.

A balanced plate with good protein, the right carbohydrates, fibre, and essential nutrients helps reduce cravings naturally and supports healthier eating habits.
