Count Your Birthdays Not by Years, but by Tears Wiped Away

Every birthday is a reminder—not just of the time gone by, but of the lives we’ve touched and the resilience we’ve built.

My perspective has shifted through the decades:
• In my 20s: It was about the cake and the cocktails—the party and the celebration.

• In my 40s: It was about the joy and milestones of my children.

• At 50: I began to question what truly mattered. Is it the time we have, or the wisdom we gather?

Now, in my late 60s, I ask a deeper question:

When was I truly born? Was it the day I took my first breath? Or is birth a continuous journey—a transformation of energy and purpose that began long before and will extend beyond me?

This realization changed my life. Life isn’t about counting years; it’s about the number of times we rise when we fall, lifting others, and making a quiet difference.

My legacy isn’t found in the businesses I’ve built or the brands I’ve scaled.

It is found in the quiet, private “wins” for those in my immediate circle:
• Ensuring my driver’s children have the tuition they need to dream bigger.
• Providing the medical care my security guards and household staff deserve.

• Helping my maids and service providers during their families’ marriages and milestones.

• Building a temple for sanitation workers in Mysore—creating a space of dignity for the unsung.

Real impact doesn’t need a stage; it needs a heart. Before we try to change the “world,” we must first serve those who serve us every day—the people who help our lives run, but often receive no publicity.

Our true measure is not in the years we live, but in the lives we uplift.

Today, in the day I entered this world, I don’t celebrate myself. I celebrate the opportunity to serve, to inspire, and to leave a ripple that grows long after I’m gone.

The Question for You:
How do you measure a life well-lived? Is it by success, satisfaction, or the lives you’ve helped to heal?

Let’s inspire each other today. Please share one “purpose-driven” moment from your journey in the comments below.

This is a slow read. Take your time.
Amopia principle # 2
GRIEF IS GOOD

This will sound wrong at first because we live in a culture that treats grief like a malfunction.
Something to fix. Something to manage.

Something to “move on” from—preferably quickly and quietly, so life can return to normal.

But have you ever wondered why sad songs stay with us longer than happy ones?

Why can a melody of heartbreak feel strangely comforting—

sometimes even more honest—than a song of joy?
Because somewhere deep within us,

we already know an ancient truth:
Life includes suffering. Sad music doesn’t depress us.

It prepares us, brings back our own past griefs.
Sad songs allow us to rehearse sorrow safely.

So when grief finally arrives,
we are not strangers to its voice.

Grief Is Not an Interruption — It Is Evidence
We often treat grief like a failure.
Something to “get over.”
To hide.
To complete and move past.
But grief is not a mistake.
Grief is proof.
Proof that something mattered.
Someone mattered.
A future mattered.

We do not grieve because something went wrong.
We grieve because something precious existed.
Grief is love—
in its most honest, unguarded form.

What Grief Teaches — That Joy Cannot
Joy fills the heart.
But grief expands it.
Joy whispers, “Stay here—this is beautiful.”
Grief says, “Remember—this was beautiful.”
This is why grief deepens us in ways happiness never can.
We do not become wise through comfort.
We become wise through loss.
Loss breaks the shell that once kept us small.

A Personal Note (Without the Whole Story)
When my daughter died, grief did not ask for permission.
It arrived.
It stayed.
It reshaped everything.
But it did not ask me to forget.
It asked me to become someone larger—
large enough to carry both love and loss.
Grief is not something you heal from.
It is something you heal into.

Why We Fear Pain — And How Suffering is a Sacred design.

AMOPIA PRINCIPLE #1 — SUFFERING IS SACRED because it is holiness at work.

Mark Twain once joked,

“I’m not afraid of death. I just don’t want to be there when it happens.”

We laugh because it’s true.

But when we ask people what they really fear, they rarely say death.

They say: “I don’t want to suffer.”

Pain Is Real. Suffering Is Created.

What exactly is suffering?
Suffering is the inner reaction—the story we build around pain.We paint monsters in the dark, and extend pain into the future.
This is why suffering feels endless—because imagination has no end.

When Yogita Was Born Blind — My Suffering Began Before Hers
The diagnosis was pain.
But my questions were suffering:
Why me?
Is this karma?
Is this divine retribution?
What did I do wrong?
And beneath it all:
Will she ever see me?
Will I ever be enough?
It wasn’t her blindness that broke me.

It was the story I feared would follow—
the imagined future I believed I could not bear.
I was wrong.

She did not come to punish me.
She came to wake me up.
To tach me as to;
Who am I without control?
Who am I when life does not obey me?
Who am I when I cannot fix what hurts?
Here is what I learned:
My suffering did not end when hers began.
It ended when I stopped resisting it.
That is when it became sacred
not cruel,
not random,
but transformative.
Refining.
True.

A Reflection for You
When you sit with your suffering—
not run from it,
not numb it—
what sacred truth begins to emerge?
What is your pain making visible
that comfort never could?

AMOPIA PRINCIPLE #1 — SUFFERING IS SACRED
Not because we want it.
But because it reveals us.
Rearranges us.
Reshapes the soul.
Next week…Amopia principle 2. Grief is hood.

Some stories don’t just move you—they change the way you see your own life.

This reader found Myopia to be more than a memoir. It’s a deeply human exploration of fatherhood, disability, grief, and the possibility of transformation through hardship.

If you’ve ever wrestled with the weight of your own story, this book is a powerful reminder: even the hardest chapters can become sacred ground.

Now available. Share it with the person in your life who needs it.

Some kinds of pain don’t just hurt—they strip you down to the parts of yourself that are real.
Not the curated version. Not the performative version. The raw, trembling, holy version.

At Amopia™, we believe suffering isn’t a detour from the path—it is the path.
That’s the heart of Principle 4: Suffering is holier than happiness.
Because what joy softens, suffering sharpens. It clarifies. It remakes you.

If you’re in the thick of it, you’re not behind—you’re becoming.

Not every truth comes in the moment you want it.
Some arrive after the door closes.
After the plan falls apart.
After the detour.

But here’s what’s also true:
The longer road often reveals the deeper wisdom.

So we’re asking—
What truth came after the detour?
Not the one you were chasing, but the one that found you.

Share in the comments or hold it close.
Either way, it matters.

Not everything that goes wrong is working against you.
Sometimes, it’s working through you.

Principle 13 of Amopia™ reminds us:
What looks like bad luck might be redirection.
What feels like setback might be sacred setup.
It’s not always punishment—it might be positioning.

You don’t have to like the detour.
But you can learn to trust where it leads.

Join our email list for deeper reflections on all 13 Principles of Amopia™.

This is your reminder:
Healing isn’t a performance.
It doesn’t need to be fast, loud, or linear.
But it does need your honesty.

You don’t have to be ready to move on.
You just have to be willing to stop pretending you’re fine.

There’s strength in slowing down.
There’s wisdom in not knowing.

Myopia is a story for those who are done hiding from their pain—
and ready to meet it with clarity and compassion.
