Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra Intensifies Conservation and Improvement of Indigenous Gaolao and Sahiwal Cattle
The recent initiative of Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) to scientifically document and unlock the hidden genetic value of Vidarbha's indigenous cattle has brought well-deserved attention to the Gaolao breed, one of Maharashtra's most valuable native cattle breeds. The initiative highlights the immense potential of Gaolao cattle in enhancing rural livelihoods, conserving indigenous germplasm and promoting climate-resilient livestock farming.
Recognizing the unique importance of the Gaolao breed, particularly in the Vidarbha region, Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra Deolapar, under the visionary leadership of its President Shri Padmesh Gupta Ji, has already accorded the highest priority to the conservation (рд╕рдВрд░рдХреНрд╖рдг), scientific breeding, propagation and sustainable development (рд╕рдВрд╡рд░реНрдзрди рдПрд╡рдВ рд╕рдВрдЧреЛрдкрди) of this invaluable indigenous breed.
Spread over more than 100 acres, Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra presently maintains 13 indigenous breeds of Indian cattle with the highest standards of scientific care, nutrition, healthcare and breed conservation. The Centre has consistently worked towards preserving India's rich bovine genetic heritage through research, training, farmer awareness and scientific interventions.
One of the most significant milestones has been the successful implementation of Embryo Transfer Technology (ETT) for indigenous breeds in collaboration with Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) and Nagpur Veterinary College. Under the technical guidance of the expert team led by Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Nitin Patil Ji, the programme has already demonstrated successful embryo transfer outcomes in Sahiwal cattle, resulting in the birth of elite calves. Simultaneously, systematic efforts have also commenced towards the genetic improvement and conservation of the Gaolao breed using advanced assisted reproductive technologies.
Building upon this scientific success, Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra MAFSU and Nagpur Veterinary College are now jointly preparing to launch an ambitious field programme titled:
"Production of Elite Gaolao and Sahiwal Cow Calves through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Embryo Transfer Technology in Ramtek Tahsil."
The proposed project aims to accelerate the production of genetically superior female calves of Gaolao and Sahiwal breeds by utilizing advanced IVF and Embryo Transfer Technology directly at the farmers' doorstep. A key component of the project is the establishment of a fully equipped Mobile Embryo Transfer Veterinary Ambulance, which will provide scientific reproductive services, embryo transfer, pregnancy diagnosis, infertility management and veterinary support in villages across Ramtek Tahsil.
This mobile service will bridge the gap between advanced reproductive biotechnology and rural livestock farmers, enabling them to access world-class veterinary reproductive services without transporting their valuable animals to distant institutions. The initiative is expected to significantly improve indigenous breed conservation, enhance milk productivity, strengthen rural livelihoods and promote sustainable livestock-based income generation.
With the continued technical support of MAFSU, the dedication of the scientific team at Nagpur Veterinary College, and the visionary leadership of Shri Padmesh Gupta Ji, Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra is committed to making Ramtek Tahsil a model region for scientific conservation, genetic improvement and proliferation of elite indigenous cattle breeds. The proposed Mobile Embryo Transfer Veterinary Ambulance will soon take this transformative technology to the doorsteps of farmersтАФa long-felt and urgent need for the livestock sector of Vidarbha.
