CETIRIZINE
CETIRIZINE is a widely utilized second-generation antihistamine employed to alleviate allergic symptoms, including fever, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, itchy throat/nose, and hives.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
It functions by selectively blocking H1 receptors in the body, thereby preventing histamine from inducing allergy symptoms.
ONSET OF ACTION
Effects typically commence within 20–60 minutes, persisting up to 24 hours. Availability: Available in 5 mg or 10 mg tablets
DOSAGE
Usually administered once daily, with or without food.
THERAPEUTIC USES
Allergic Rhinitis:
Seasonal (pollen, ragweed) and perennial (dust mites, pet dander).
Chronic Urticaria (Hives): Reduces the itching, severity, and duration of hives.
Sometimes utilized for itching or as an adjuvant to epinephrine for anaphylaxis.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
cetirizine can induce drowsiness. Common Side Effects: Drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, headache, and sore throat.
PRECAUTIONS
Avoid operating vehicles or machinery until the effects of the medication are known. Avoid consuming alcohol, as it can exacerbate drowsiness.
Long-term Use:
Abrupt cessation of the medication after several months of daily use can precipitate temporary severe itching.
Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe during pregnancy, but not recommended during breastfeeding.
RENAL/HEPATIC IMPAIRMENT
dosage reduction may be necessary in patients with kidney or liver impairment.
INTERACTION WITH FOOD/ALCOHOL
Food does not significantly affect the overall absorption of the drug but may slightly delay its onset. Alcohol enhances the sedative effects of the medication.
