Every home gets a Diwali safai. The balcony usually doesn't. This year, give it the October Reset: what goes into your pots in the next few weeks feeds you from Diwali to Holi.

Everyone blames the rain for this. The rain is the one thing that kills it. 🍃

That white film on your lauki, peas, bhindi or roses is powdery mildew — and it's the rare fungus that does not need wet leaves. Water sitting on a leaf actually inhibits and kills its spores. What it wants is humid, still, low-light air at 20–30°C, which is exactly what your balcony becomes the week the downpours stop.

It's also not sitting on the leaf. It's feeding through it — pushing structures into the leaf's own cells for sugar. A spore that lands today is making new spores in 3–7 days, and the wind takes them to the next pot. That's how one leaf becomes the whole plant in a week.

And yes — the milk spray your neighbour swears by has actual research behind it. A 1999 Brazilian greenhouse study found cow's milk diluted to 10–50% controlled powdery mildew on zucchini as well as a conventional fungicide. Above 30% it grew mould on the leaves, so 1 part milk to 9 parts water is the sensible end of it.

That is what the All India Kitchen Garden Association (.aikga ) has built with Udyan Mela, and it is why IFFCO Urban Gardens keeps coming back. Our [Xth] year at the mela, and the conversations only get better. First-time gardeners, lifelong ones, and a lot of people somewhere in between.

Our first Garden Bazaar. Definitely not our last. 🌿
The 33rd edition, and Jaipur's gardeners showed us exactly why it keeps coming back. Rows of green, kids with soil on their hands, grown-ups swapping tips like old friends, and workshops for every age.
