इसका इतिहास गंगा बेसिन सभ्यता और वैदिक सभ्यता से भी पुराना है।

सरस्वती रिवर सभ्यता के समय, हड़प्पा क़ालीन सभ्यता में लगभग दस हज़ार वर्षों से भारत वर्ष में कुल्थी की दाल खाई जाती रही है. कर्नाटक, आंध्र प्रदेश में खुदाई में इस दाल के अवशेष मिले. तो हड़प्पा में भी कुलथ का प्रयोग होता था।

वेदों में कुल्थी के औषधीय गुणों का वर्णन है।

तमिल में तो संगम साहित्य में कुल्थी के गुणों का कई पुस्तकों मिस्टर वर्णन है।

पय्यामपल्ली तमिलनाडु के वेल्लोर जिले का एक गाँव है।

जानवरों को पालतू बनाने और पौधों की खेती का सबसे पहला साक्ष्य इसी स्थान पर मिला है, जिसकी खुदाई भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण द्वारा की गई थी। इस गांव में मिट्टी के बर्तन बनाने और कुलथी की खेती के साक्ष्य मिले हैं।

धरती पर मौजूद अन्य किसी भी दाल के श्रोत से यह बहुत ज्यादा पौष्टिक है।

आयुर्वेद की दृष्टि से यह सुपर फ़ूड है।
