World Heritage Day
உலக பாரம்பரிய தினம்
ലോക പൈതൃക ദിനം

As the world faces its own ways of disasters, this year’s theme stands as a gentle yet powerful reminder:
“Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters.”

One such living heritage within these contexts is the Sacred Groves. They are not only treasures to be protected, but also living systems that call for immediate and collective emergency responses from across the world.

Sacred Groves — a living heritage where the soil breathes, trees speak, and birds survive. From the micro to the macro, they hold countless untold treasures of life.

They are not merely small patches of forest ecosystem, but vibrant biodiversity hubs. Sacred Groves stand as symbols of communities who have long believed in and understood their importance for survival—protecting them in the form of deities, ancestors, and nature itself.

Their relevance to this year’s theme becomes evident through the many challenges they face today—deforestation, environmental degradation, changing cultural practices, and the loss of traditional protection systems. These factors, in turn, contribute to the larger climatic changes and disasters we experience, while Sacred Groves themselves are silently and unknowingly being affected.

Being a living heritage in the context of conflicts and disasters, Sacred Groves call for urgent emergency response—echoing the silent cry of nature that seeks protection through them.

The Black-rumped Flameback, often called the natural carpenter of our ecosystems, plays a vital role as an ecosystem engineer. With its strong beak and rhythmic tapping, it helps shape tree habitats, creating nesting cavities not only for itself but also for many other species.

Surrounded by diverse trees, this flameback was observed visiting a tree nearly lost under debris—perhaps searching for insects hidden beneath the bark. In doing so, it acts as a natural pest controller, maintaining the health of trees and preventing infestations.

Beyond this, it also functions as a forage associator, indirectly aiding other birds and animals that benefit from the insects it exposes. Such interactions highlight its importance in maintaining ecological balance.

Also known as the lesser golden-backed woodpecker, this species is widely distributed across the Indian subcontinent and is among the few woodpeckers that have successfully adapted to urban environments—reminding us that even in our cities, nature’s engineers continue their silent, essential work.

The fruit we relished in childhood ,soft, slippery, and delightfully slimy, has quietly faded from our plates, though not from nature’s memory.

Yet, it hasn’t gone unnoticed by our permanent resident,Malabar giant squirrel. Perched high among the trees, it spends its time relishing the seed kernel of the Śleṣmātaka phala, fondly known as mukkatapazham, named for its mucilaginous nature.

This fruit finds mention in the classical Phala Varga by acharya Sushruta, and is also described in Bhavaprakasha Nighantu and other classical texts

Despite its rich heritage, it remains one of the least explored fruits today. And now — its season has arrived.

One of the very important leafy vegetables, which has nowadays become less used in both diet and medicine, was once commonly found growing along fences, roadsides, and in gardens. However, it is now seen in fewer numbers and is less widely identified. Being a climber with a strong protective mechanism in the form of thorns, it serves as a wonderful medicine as well as a leafy vegetable, with every part of the plant having medicinal value.

A condiment that is an essential part of Indian cuisine is well reflected in the proverb “கடுகு சிறுத்தாலும் காரம் குறையாது” (Kadugu siruthalum karam kurayadhu). This means that even though it is tiny, its pungency never diminishes. Despite its small size, this spice is known for its strong flavor and plays a key role in tempering (tadka), as well as being a major ingredient in many formulations used for skin diseases and pain management. As a part of the traditional Anjarai Petti, Sarsapa (mustard) can also be used medicinally in various simple forms.

A dravya that forms a part of Uramarunnu / Urai Marundhu holds special significance in the medicinal kit given to children. Valued for its Bhutaghna and Krimighna properties, it helps ward off harmful influences and parasites, thereby protecting children who are more vulnerable to infections and external factors, and aiding in the management of common childhood ailments.

Being a native species of dry deciduous forests, its adaptation to dry slopes contributes to soil stabilization in fragile or degraded ecosystems. The floral characteristics indicate ornithophilous pollination, with the flowers being pollinated by birds and butterflies.

The fruit is traditionally used in the management of diarrhea and constipation.

Holi:A festival that signifies the shift from winter to spring. During this season, we witness nature undergo a beautiful transformation ,where trees burst into full bloom, pollinators become active, and agricultural fields renew with fresh life.

This period celebrates the richness of forest wealth and the harmony we share with nature. It gently reminds us of our deep dependence on ecological cycles and the importance of protecting and preserving them.
