Early warning signs of baby’s illness

06/08/2026

Monsoon brings cooler weather—but also an increased risk of viral illnesses, mosquito-borne diseases, skin infections, and stomach infections.

A few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping your newborn or infant safe.

Which of these tips did you find most helpful? Let me know in the comments!

Here’s how to overcome the 5 most common reasons:

1️⃣ Poor Latch
A shallow latch is one of the biggest reasons babies don’t get enough milk and mothers experience ni**le pain.

✅ Baby’s mouth should cover most of the ar**la, not just the ni**le.
✅ Baby’s lips should be flanged outward.
✅ Feeding should be comfortable—not painful.
✅ If you have persistent pain, cracked ni**les or your baby isn’t gaining weight, get the latch checked by your pediatrician or lactation consultant.

2️⃣ Infrequent Feeding
Breast milk works on a simple principle—the more your baby feeds, the more milk your body makes.

✅ Feed on demand, not by the clock.
✅ Most newborns need 8–12 feeds every 24 hours.
✅ Don’t wait for your baby to cry. Early hunger cues like rooting, sucking fingers and lip-smacking are better signals.

3️⃣ Lack of Support
Breastfeeding becomes much easier when the mother is supported.

✅ Let family members help with household work.
✅ Fathers can burp the baby, change diapers and emotionally support the mother.
✅ Don’t hesitate to ask for professional help if breastfeeding feels difficult.

Remember, asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.

4️⃣ Inadequate Milk Supply
Most mothers actually produce enough milk. The problem is often perceived low milk supply.

Before assuming your milk is insufficient, check:
✔️ Baby passes urine at least 6 times/day after the first week.
✔️ Baby is gaining weight appropriately.
✔️ Baby looks satisfied after most feeds.

To improve milk supply:
✅ Feed frequently.
✅ Ensure a deep latch.
✅ Empty the breasts well.
✅ Stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet and get adequate rest.

5️⃣ Early Supplementation
Giving unnecessary formula, glucose water, honey or other top feeds in the early days can reduce breastfeeding.

When babies drink less from the breast, your body receives less stimulation to produce milk.

✅ Exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months, unless your pediatrician advises otherwise for a medical reason.
✅ If supplementation is medically needed, continue breastfeeding alongside it whenever possible.
