The Limb Is Gone. The Pain Can Still Be Real.
One of the most misunderstood types of pain is phantom limb pain.
A person can experience burning, cramping, pressure, tingling or even severe pain in a limb that has been amputated.
That doesn't make the pain imaginary.
After amputation, the nerves and brain pathways associated with the missing limb can continue producing and interpreting pain signals.
And when someone says, "But your leg isn't there anymore," it can make an already difficult experience even more isolating.
Phantom limb pain deserves to be taken seriously.
Treatment may involve addressing the nerve pathways as well as helping the brain adapt to the changes through rehabilitation techniques.
If someone you know is experiencing pain in a limb that is no longer there, believe them.
They aren't imagining it.
Their pain is real - and it may be treatable.
