Did you know that oral and maxillofacial surgery wasn't invented by a single person or even a single country?

This unique specialty evolved over centuries because injuries involving the mouth, jaws, and face required more than just fixing a broken bone. Patients needed to regain the ability to breathe, speak, eat, and smile confidently—while preserving their facial appearance and proper bite.

Where dentistry and surgery met, a new specialty was born.

In this video, Dr. Vikram Singh explores the fascinating origins of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and why treating the face has always been one of medicine's greatest challenges.

And this is only the beginning.

In Part 2, discover how ancient physicians managed jaw fractures nearly 5,000 years ago—without X-rays, anesthesia, or modern surgical instruments.

Watch now and follow for the next chapter of this incredible journey through surgical history.

A facial injury can cause swelling and bruising—but some symptoms may point to something much more serious than a simple black eye.

If you experience:
⚠️ Double vision
⚠️ Difficulty looking up or moving the eye
⚠️ Reduced vision
⚠️ Numbness in the cheek, upper lip, or upper teeth

it could indicate an **orbital floor fracture**—a break in the thin bone that supports the eye.

When this bone fractures, the muscles that move the eye can become trapped, leading to double vision and restricted eye movement. Nearby nerves can also be affected, causing numbness in parts of the face.

What looks like a minor injury on the outside may involve the facial bones, eye socket, nerves, and vision underneath.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important to protect vision and restore normal function. In many cases, maxillofacial surgeons work closely with eye specialists to manage these injuries.

MONDAY MYTHS OF MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY — EPISODE 7

MYTH: “If your jaw clicks, it’s getting damaged.”

That click or pop from your jaw can sound worrying — but does it always mean something is getting damaged? Not necessarily.

Jaw clicking can be related to movement within the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint), and some people experience it without pain or significant difficulty.

However, it deserves attention when clicking is accompanied by:
• Jaw pain
• Repeated locking
• Difficulty opening your mouth
• Difficulty chewing

So, don’t panic over a click alone — but don’t ignore it when other symptoms appear with it.

Save this reel and share it with someone who keeps wondering why their jaw clicks.

Before facial surgery, always ask about Plan B.

Most patients ask about the cost, recovery time and expected results. But one of the most important questions is often forgotten:

“What happens if everything does not go exactly as planned?”

A responsible facial surgery consultation should clearly discuss:

✅ The realistic expected outcome
✅ Possible risks and complications
✅ What happens if healing takes longer
✅ Alternative treatment options
✅ Follow-up care and backup plans

Any surgeon can explain the best-case scenario or show you an ideal result. But a trustworthy surgeon should also be comfortable discussing uncertainty, limitations and contingency plans.

A consultation should never feel like a sales pitch. It should be an honest conversation that helps you make a safe, informed decision before entering the operating room.

Before choosing a facial surgeon, ask:

“What is your Plan B?”

The answer may reveal more than the perfect before-and-after pictures.
