ದಂತ ವೈದ್ಯರು ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಕೆಲವು ಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳಿಂದ ಇದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಂದೇ ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ ಆ ಬದಿಯ ಹಲ್ಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸವೆತ (wear), ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಚಿ(ಪ್ಲಾಕ್)(tartar) (calculus)ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಈ ಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳಿಂದ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಚಪ್ಪರಿಸುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು.
