Population Based Cancer Registry Kashmir

The first ever population based cancer statistics in was recently published as part of national cancer registry program.
The &K Govt has taken note of the high burden and called for a workshop on cancer burden and care. Organised by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)/DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH RESEARCH (DHR) M/O Health & Family Welfare, Government of India in collaboration with NITI Aayog Department of Biotechnology Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and serval experts from J&K and rest of the country to deliberate and discuss about roadmap to tackle the cancer burden.
Presenting the cancer statistics on burden and care from the which laid the basis of following discussions.
♧ There are differences in cancers with &K, but high upper and lower Gastrointestinal, lung and breast (females) cancers were unique.
♧ A lot of cancers are preventable: related to to***co, alcohol, dietary practices and evolving lifestyle diseases and infectious agents
♧ 60-70% of cancers were diagnosed in advanced stages and only about 45-50% patients could be started on treatment with 30 days of diagnosis
♧ The research roadmap emphasises on raising awareness levels, early diagnosis of common cancers, tackling the risk factors, finding low cost and effective treatment strategies, implementation research for available interventions and appropriate discovery science
♧ Strengthening cancer registries was unanimously agreed to as vital to monitor inform actions, monitor cancer burden and interventions

Understanding Cancer
Cancer is not one disease, but a collection of related diseases that can occur almost anywhere in the body. At its most basic, cancer is a disease of the genes in the cells of our body. Genes control the way our cells work. But, changes to these genes can cause cells to malfunction, causing them to grow and divide when they should not—or preventing them from dying when they should. These abnormal cells can become cancer.

Understanding how genetic changes cause cancer is one way to understand this disease, while cancer statistics is another. Cancer statistics help scientists understand the burden of cancer on society. Statistics can tell us things such as how many people are diagnosed with and die from cancer each year and the number of people who are living after a cancer diagnosis. Changes in statistics over time can help scientists find areas where progress is needed.

Cancer statistics also help scientists understand cancer health disparities. Examples of disparities include the higher cancer death rates, less frequent use of proven screening tests, and higher rates of advanced cancer diagnoses that are found in certain groups of people.
