On 16 May 2026, Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine organized an awareness programme in the waiting area of the OPD with the objective of educating patients and attendants about Tuberculosis (TB), its early symptoms, modes of transmission, and preventive measures. The programme was conducted as part of ongoing public health awareness initiatives aimed at promoting early diagnosis and community participation in TB prevention and control.
During the programme, Dr. Suheena Khanday, Research Officer (Unani), delivered an informative lecture highlighting the growing public health importance of Tuberculosis and the need for timely identification and treatment of the disease. She explained that TB primarily affects the lungs but can also involve other organs of the body. Emphasis was laid on recognizing the common symptoms of TB, including persistent cough for more than two weeks, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, chest pain, and loss of appetite.
Dr. Khanday further elaborated on the modes of spread of TB and informed the audience that the disease spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. She stressed the importance of maintaining respiratory hygiene, covering the mouth while coughing or sneezing, ensuring proper ventilation in living spaces, maintaining good nutrition, and avoiding close contact with untreated TB patients. The audience was also advised to seek medical consultation immediately in case of persistent respiratory symptoms and to adhere strictly to the prescribed treatment regimen, as incomplete treatment may lead to drug-resistant TB.
The programme witnessed active participation from patients, attendants, and hospital staff, who showed keen interest in understanding the disease and its prevention. Informational interaction during the session helped in addressing common misconceptions regarding TB and encouraged the public to adopt preventive health practices.
The awareness programme concluded with an appeal to the public to contribute towards the elimination of Tuberculosis through awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment compliance.
