of India. of India, Since 1985. Over the past few decades this institute has emerged as the leading institute of the Unani medical research in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The campus houses a building which contains Clinical Department (including Opd, ipd, Labortaries, Pharmacy), SMPU (Survey of Medicinal Plant Unit), Drug Standardization Research Unit (DSRU), Administrative Block, PG Departmen

t, canteen. The campus also houses Herbal Garden and Animal House. This Institute has affliated with Univerty of Kashmir to start PG courses from the session 2016-17 in Unani Medicine for the first time in the valley. Presently institute offers PG programme in two disciplines; Moalajat (Medicine) and Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology). The Institute regularly organizes academic events like CME, Workshops, Seminars and Guest Lectures. Clinical services are provided to the patients for Skin Diseases, Hypertension, Diabetes, Obesity, GIT and Hepatobiliary Disorders, Neurological, Psychiatric and Geriatric Care. The Regimenal Therapy (Ilaj Bit Tadbeer) Centre of the hospital Provides Massage, Cupping, Leeching and Inkibab etc. facilities. Hospital also provides health care facilities to socioeconomically weaker groups at their door steps by regularly organising health camps. The Institute has earned great fame in the state for the successful treatment of three chronic diseases- Zeequn Nafas (bronchial asthma), Waja-ul-Mufasil (rheumatoid arthritis) and Bars (vitiligo). Clinical studies carried out on these diseases at this Institute, along with other centres, has helped the Council to obtain provisional patents on three Unani drugs. The Council’s researchers working at RRIUM, Srinagar have collected a large number of medicinal plants used in Unani Medicine from different forest areas of Jammu and Kashmir. They have also been successful in the experimental cultivation of some important Unani Medicinal plants.

On 16 May 2026, Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine organized an awareness programme in the waiting area of the OPD with the objective of educating patients and attendants about Tuberculosis (TB), its early symptoms, modes of transmission, and preventive measures. The programme was conducted as part of ongoing public health awareness initiatives aimed at promoting early diagnosis and community participation in TB prevention and control.
During the programme, Dr. Suheena Khanday, Research Officer (Unani), delivered an informative lecture highlighting the growing public health importance of Tuberculosis and the need for timely identification and treatment of the disease. She explained that TB primarily affects the lungs but can also involve other organs of the body. Emphasis was laid on recognizing the common symptoms of TB, including persistent cough for more than two weeks, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, chest pain, and loss of appetite.
Dr. Khanday further elaborated on the modes of spread of TB and informed the audience that the disease spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. She stressed the importance of maintaining respiratory hygiene, covering the mouth while coughing or sneezing, ensuring proper ventilation in living spaces, maintaining good nutrition, and avoiding close contact with untreated TB patients. The audience was also advised to seek medical consultation immediately in case of persistent respiratory symptoms and to adhere strictly to the prescribed treatment regimen, as incomplete treatment may lead to drug-resistant TB.
The programme witnessed active participation from patients, attendants, and hospital staff, who showed keen interest in understanding the disease and its prevention. Informational interaction during the session helped in addressing common misconceptions regarding TB and encouraged the public to adopt preventive health practices.
The awareness programme concluded with an appeal to the public to contribute towards the elimination of Tuberculosis through awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment compliance.

Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine Srinagar organized a medical health camp under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan – 100 Day Campaign at Thune village in district Ganderbal J & K, with the aim of promoting awareness regarding tuberculosis and providing healthcare services to the rural and tribal population of the area. The programme focused on educating people about the causes, symptoms, transmission, prevention, and treatment of tuberculosis, while emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, regular medication, proper nutrition, and maintenance of personal hygiene for effective disease control. During the camp, Dr. Sumera Mehfooz delivered an informative awareness session for the local residents and tribal communities, highlighting preventive strategies against TB and encouraging people to seek timely medical care in case of symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, weight loss, and weakness. She also addressed the misconceptions and social stigma associated with tuberculosis and motivated the community to actively participate in national TB eradication efforts. On 9th May 2026, the IAEC (Institutional Animal Ethics Committee) meeting was successfully held at the Ibn Sina Auditorium, RRIUM Srinagar. The meeting commenced with a warm welcome address by the Chairperson, Dr. Irfata Ara, Deputy Director, RRIUM Srinagar, who welcomed all committee members, researchers, and participants and highlighted the significance of ethical, scientifically robust, and responsible research practices.

The meeting was attended by Member Secretary Dr. Towseef, Research Officer (Biochemistry), Main Nominee CPCSEA Dr. Azmat Alam Khan, along with other esteemed members of the IAEC, RRIUM Srinagar.

During the session, a total of 9 research protocols were presented and discussed extensively for scientific and ethical scrutiny. Detailed deliberations were carried out regarding study design, animal welfare considerations, methodological quality, and compliance with CPCSEA guidelines.

The meeting reflected the institute’s continued commitment towards promoting high-quality biomedical research and strengthening ethical standards in experimental studies related to Unani medicine and allied biomedical sciences.

On 15 May 2026, Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine Srinagar organized the 2nd Institutional Medical Research Advisory Committee (IMRAC) meeting with the objective of promoting scientific research and strengthening academic and research activities in the field of Unani medicine. The meeting was attended by distinguished experts, faculty members, researchers, and members of the advisory committee.
Dr. Suheena Khanday, Research Officer (Unani), formally welcomed the committee members and participants. In her welcome address, she apprised the committee that a total of 10 research protocols were scheduled for review during the meeting. She highlighted that the proposed protocols covered a broad spectrum of research domains, including in vitro studies, preclinical studies, clinical trials, observational studies, and literary research, reflecting the institute’s multidisciplinary and evidence-based research approach.
Prof. M. S. Salim Khan delivered the introductory remarks and emphasized the significance of ethical, scientific, and methodologically sound research in advancing healthcare and traditional systems of medicine. He appreciated the efforts of the institute in fostering a robust research culture and encouraging innovative studies addressing contemporary health challenges.
During the meeting, the Principal Investigators presented their respective research protocols before the committee members for scientific evaluation and deliberation. The protocols were thoroughly discussed with regard to their objectives, methodology, feasibility, ethical considerations, and expected outcomes. The Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine Srinagar organized a “TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan – 100 Days Campaign” programme at Hari Ganiwan village in District Ganderbal, J & K, to create awareness about tuberculosis (TB) among the tribal population and local residents. During the programme, Dr. Sumera Mehfooz, Research Associate (Unani), educated the people about the causes, symptoms, transmission, and preventive strategies of TB. She emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, proper hygiene, balanced nutrition, and regular adherence to treatment for effective prevention and control of the disease. The programme also highlighted the need to avoid self-medication and encouraged people to seek timely medical consultation in case of symptoms related to TB. The awareness session witnessed active participation from the tribal community and served as an important initiative towards supporting the vision of a TB-free India.

On 11th May 2026, the Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centre (PPvC) of the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Srinagar, organized a Pharmacovigilance Awareness Programme at the AYUSH Centre, District Hospital Ganderbal, for patients, doctors, and paramedic staff.

During the programme, Dr. Iqra Rifat, JRF Pharmacovigilance, highlighted the importance of reporting Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs), explained the ADR reporting procedures, and emphasized the role of pharmacovigilance in ensuring drug safety. Participants were encouraged to promptly report any adverse effects associated with AYUSH medications.

Dr. Abrar Wani, Medical Officer (Unani), and Dr. Khalida, Medical Officer (Homeopathy), also delivered informative sessions on adverse drug reactions and the risks associated with self-medication.

A total of 85 patients, 2 AYUSH doctors, and 3 paramedic staff attended the programme. IEC materials related to pharmacovigilance were distributed among the participants to enhance awareness.

The programme concluded successfully with active participation from all attendees.

The Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine Srinagar organized an awareness programme on Antimicrobial Resistance at Gund village in District Ganderbal, J & K, with the primary objective of educating patients, particularly the tribal population, about the dangers of self-medication and the importance of using medicines only with a valid medical prescription. During the programme, Dr. Sumera Mehfooz, Research Associate (Unani), sensitized the local tribal community and other residents about antimicrobial resistance, highlighting how the irrational and unsupervised use of medicines can lead to drug resistance and reduced effectiveness of treatments. She also provided clear guidelines regarding the rational use of medicines and emphasized the need to consult qualified healthcare professionals before taking any medication. In addition to the awareness activities, patients attending the camp were examined and treated, and compound Unani medicines were distributed among the beneficiaries, thereby delivering both health education and essential healthcare services to the tribal population and the wider community.
