🦾 Post-Stroke Shoulder Care: Prevent Shoulder Dislocation
After stroke or paralysis, weakness and reduced muscle control can make the shoulder unstable. Proper handling, positioning, and controlled movement can help reduce the risk of shoulder subluxation/dislocation.
4 important precautions:
1. 🚫 Never pull the affected arm to lift the patient from bed. Support the patient’s body and the affected arm properly.
2. 🛏️ Provide proper shoulder support while sitting. A sling or shoulder support may be recommended in the early stage when shoulder stability is poor.
3. 🚶 Support the arm correctly while walking. Never lift or pull the patient by the affected arm. Maintain proper shoulder positioning.
4. 🏋️ Be careful with overhead exercises. Overhead and side movements should be slow and controlled and performed under physiotherapist guidance.
👉 Remember: A weak shoulder needs support, proper positioning & controlled movement—not pulling.
Consult a physiotherapist for an individualized stroke rehabilitation / paralysis rehabilitation program.
