It was a pleasure to be invited as a moderator for a panel of esteemed gynecologists by Surat ObGy society on 21/1/24. We had a great time discussing and exploring case scenarios of pubertal disorders.
Thanks to Dr. Mona Shroff and Dr. Kavita Shah for inviting me and I am grateful to all the moderators for an insightful discussion.

Good morning.
In these testing times(no pun intended), as we are trying as an entire race to combat COVID 19, one has to play his/her part in halting this pandemic. While most of us have been ideal law- abiding citizens, we are being stretched to the limit of our patience and endurance by actually doing nothing. But for the sake of the immunologically compromised sections of the society, it’s essential that we take utmost precaution and follow the advice of the authorities, even if we feel that we are fit to fight an infection. It might seem difficult at present, but with every passing day, researchers, doctors and scientists are working at a feverish pace to control this nightmare. It’s also important to understand the role social media can play in these difficult times. Most of us know what’s authentic and what’s not but not everyone in our contact/forward list does. So we should refrain from spreading misinformation.
So, without trying to sound preachy, I wish that we emerge from this situation at the earliest! A little bit wiser, humbled by the scope of the universe and more willing to help each other.
Thanks,
Dr. Bharat Sharma

On women’s day, I would like to take the opportunity to say something about Polycystic o***y syndrome(PCOS) and its endocrine(hormonal) aspects. PCOS is a common condition, affecting 10 % of all women with symptoms of menstrual disturbances, acne/pimples and hirsutism/ unwanted hair growth. Like all other metabolic disorders viz. diabetes and hypertension, PCOS is also to some extent a lifestyle disorder with genetic correlates. A healthy lifestyle with appropriate diet and sufficient physical activity can help keep this condition in check. At the same time, too strict a diet and extensive physical activity can also affect the menstrual cycle. Managing PCOS requires the combined efforts of an endocrinologist, gynaecologist and dermatologist.
PCOS affects all the stages of a woman’s life but can be managed with good outcomes in most cases. It’s not just a disease of adolescents but it also affects women of reproductive age group and postmenopausal women. Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and other metabolic disorders can occur in patients with PCOS and they need to talk to their doctors regarding the risk.
To summarise, PCOS is more a variation than a disease and with proper lifestyle modifications, it can be well managed. Every woman with PCOS can achieve her potential in every sphere of life with expert guidance and TLC.

HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY to all!
