‘That’s opened a can of worms’
Problem-solving and decision-making. Enquire everyone around you if these circumstances are part of their day and they answer 'yes!’ But how many of us have had training in problem-solving? Very rarely we approach a problem systematically. Decision is a symptom of confusion. Only those who are confused, need to decide, others just know. When you are confused, only then there is a need to decide otherwise, you just know. And when you just know, who needs a decision, the decision is already made. When you just know, do you need to make a decision? The decision is already made, it is obvious, who needs to decide, and who needs to think? It is obvious.
Why we fail to handle the problematic environment in a healthy way? Expertizing in problem solving proves who you are and what you are. If we fail to solve a problem and that can create a new problem, so it may go on. Isn’t it very important to handle a problem efficaciously?

We know it's a critical element of our work, but do we know how to do it effectively? This article will help you to learn the process of solving a problems effectively.
People tend to do three things when they faced with a problem: they get afraid or uncomfortable and wish it would go away; they feel that they have to come up with an answer and it has to be the right answer; and they look for someone to blame. Being faced with a problem becomes a problem. And that's a problem because, in fact, there are always going to be problems!
There are two reasons why we tend to see a problem as a problem: it has to be solved and we're not sure how to find the best solution, and there will probably be conflicts about what the best solution is. Most of us tend to be "conflict-averse". We don't feel comfortable dealing with conflict and we tend to have the feeling that something bad is going to happen. The goal of a good problem-solving process is to make us and our organization more "conflict-friendly" and "conflict-competent".
There are two important things to remember about problems and conflicts: they happen all the time and they are opportunities to improve the system and the relationships. They are actually providing us with information that we can use to fix what needs fixing and do a better job. Looked at in this way, we can almost begin to welcome problems!
Because people are born problem solvers, the biggest challenge is to overcome the tendency to immediately come up with a solution. Let me say that again. The most common mistake in problem solving is trying to find a solution right away. That's a mistake because it tries to put the solution at the beginning of the process, when what we need is a solution at the end of the process.
Here are seven-steps for an effective problem-solving process.
1. Identify the issues. Be clear about what the problem is. ...
2. Understand everyone's interests. ...
3. List the possible solutions. ...
4. Evaluate the options. ...
5. Select an option or options. ...
6. Document the agreement(s). ...
7. Agree on contingencies, monitoring, and evaluation.
1. Identify the issues
• Be clear about what the problem is.
• Remember that different people might have different views of what the issues are.
2. Understand everyone's interests.
• This is a critical step that is usually missing.
• Interests are the needs that you want satisfied by any given solution. We often ignore our true interests as we become attached to one particular solution.
• The best solution is the one that satisfies everyone's interests.
• This is the time for active listening. Put down your differences for a while and listen to each other with the intention to understand.
3. List the possible solutions.
• This is the time to do some brainstorming. There may be lots of room for creativity.
4. Evaluate the options.
• What are the pluses and minuses? In good conscience!
5. Select an option or options.
• What's the best option, in the balance?
• Is there a way to "bundle" a number of options together for a more satisfactory solution?
6. Document the agreement(s).
• Don't rely on memory. Writing it down will help you think through all the details and implications.
7. Agree on contingencies, monitoring, and evaluation.
• Conditions may change. Make contingency agreements about foreseeable future circumstances.
• How will you monitor compliance and follow-through? Create opportunities to evaluate the agreements and their implementation. ("Let's try it this way for three months and then look at it.")
Effective problem solving does take some time and attention more of the latter than the former. But less time and attention than is required by a problem not well solved. What it really takes is a willingness to slow down. A problem is like a curve in the road. Take it right and you'll find yourself in good shape for the straightaway that follows. Take it too fast and you may not be in as good shape.
Working through this process is not always a strictly linear exercise. You may have to cycle back to an earlier step. For example, if you're having trouble selecting an option, you may have to go back to thinking about the interests.
This process can be used in a large group, between two people, or by one person who is faced with a difficult decision. The more difficult and important the problem, the more helpful and necessary it is to use a disciplined process. If you're just trying to decide where to go out for lunch, you probably don't need to go through these seven steps!
Don't worry if it feels a bit unfamiliar and uncomfortable at first. You'll have lots of opportunities to practice!

Stress is a part of day to day living. A college student may experience stress meeting academic demands, adjusting to a new living environment, or developing friendships. The stress you experience is not necessarily harmful. Mild forms of stress can act as a motivator and energizer. However, if your stress level is too high, medical and social problems can result.
Let’s know what a Stress is: Although we tend to think of stress as caused by external events, events in themselves are not stressful. Rather, it is the way in which we interpret and react to events that makes them stressful. People differ dramatically in the type of events they interpret as stressful and the way in which they respond to such stress. For example, speaking in public can be stressful for some people and relaxing for others.

Symptoms of Stress: There are several signs and symptoms that you may notice when you are experiencing stress. These signs and symptoms fall into four categories: Feelings, Thoughts, Behavior, and Physiology.
When you are under stress, you may experience one or more of the following:
Feelings
• Feeling anxious.
• Feeling scared.
• Feeling irritable.
• Feeling moody.
Thoughts
• Low self-esteem.
• Fear of failure.
• Inability to concentrate.
• Embarrassing easily.
• Worrying about the future.
• Preoccupation with thoughts/tasks.
• Forgetfulness.
Behavior
• Stuttering and other speech difficulties.
• Crying for no apparent reason.
• Acting impulsively.
• Startling easily.
• Laughing in a high pitch and nervous tone of voice.
• Grinding your teeth.
• Increasing smoking.
• Increasing use of drugs and alcohol.
• Being accident prone.
• Losing your appetite or overeating.
Physiology
• Perspiration /sweaty hands.
• Increased heart beat.
• Trembling.
• Nervous ticks.
• Dryness of throat and mouth.
• Tiring easily.
• Urinating frequently.
• Sleeping problems.
• Diarrhea / indigestion / vomiting.
• Butterflies in stomach.
• Headaches.
• Premenstrual tension.
• Pain in the neck and or lower back.
• Loss of appetite or overeating.
• Susceptibility to illness.

What could be the Causes of Stress: Both positive and negative events in one's life can be stressful. However, major life changes are the greatest contributors of stress for most people. They place the greatest demand on resources for coping.

Major Life Changes that can be Stressful
• Geographic mobility.
• Going to college.
• Transfer to a new school.
• Marriage.
• Pregnancy.
• New job.
• New life style.
• Divorce.
• Death of a loved one.
• Being fired from your job.
Environmental Events that can be Stressful
• Time pressure.
• Competition.
• Financial problems.
• Noise.
• Disappointments.

Here we could see about how to reduce our stress level: Many stresses can be changed, eliminated, or minimized. Here are some things you can do to reduce your level of stress:
• Become aware of your own reactions to stress.
• Reinforce positive self-statements.
• Focus on your good qualities and accomplishments.
• Avoid unnecessary competition.
• Develop assertive behaviors.
• Recognize and accept your limits. Remember that everyone is unique and different.
• Get a hobby or two. Relax and have fun.
• Exercise regularly.
• Eat a balanced diet daily.
• Talk with friends or someone you can trust about your worries/problems.
• Learn to use your time wisely:
o Evaluate how you are budgeting your time.
o Plan ahead and avoid procrastination.
o Make a weekly schedule and try to follow it.
• Set realistic goals.
• Set priorities.
• When studying for an exam, study in short blocks and gradually lengthen the time you spend studying. Take frequent short breaks.
• Practice relaxation techniques. For example, whenever you feel tense, slowly breathe in and out for several minutes.
