🦴 “Bible therapy” for a ganglion cyst? Please DON'T try this at home!

Some people believe that hitting a ganglion cyst with a heavy object can make it disappear. While this may sound funny, smashing the cyst can seriously injure your wrist.

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled lump that commonly develops around the wrist or hand, often arising near a joint or tendon.

Most ganglion cysts are painless, but they can sometimes cause:
🔹 Pain when moving the wrist
🔹 Pain from pressure on nearby nerves
🔹 Swelling or discomfort
🔹 Increased pain when the wrist is bent

Treatment depends on the size, symptoms and location of the cyst.

💉 Aspiration can remove the fluid and reduce the swelling, but the cyst may come back.

🏥 If the cyst keeps recurring or causes significant symptoms, surgical excision may be considered.

👉 Don't try to burst or smash a ganglion cyst yourself. Get it properly evaluated by an orthopaedic specialist.

Don't treat your wrist with a Bible. Treat it with proper medical care! 😄

Hip pain isn’t always simple “wear and tear.” It could be AVN. 🦴

AVN - Avascular Necrosis is a condition in which the blood supply to the bone reduces, causing the bone tissue to weaken and gradually become damaged.

In the hip, AVN commonly affects the head of the femur, and in the early stage it may feel like ordinary hip pain. As the condition progresses, pain can increase and even normal activities such as standing and walking may become difficult.

Some important risk factors include:
• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Long-term steroid use
• Reduced blood supply to the bone
• Certain medical conditions or previous injuries

The important point is that early diagnosis can make a big difference. When AVN is identified in its early stages, appropriate treatment can help protect the joint and may prevent further damage.
If you have persistent hip or groin pain, especially while walking or bearing weight, don’t ignore it.
Consult an orthopaedic specialist for proper evaluation.

🩹 Knee patches are trending… but do they actually cure knee pain?

Knee patches and pain-relief ointments may provide temporary symptom relief, often through cooling sensations or topical medicines such as diclofenac.

For example, diclofenac is an NSAID that helps reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting COX enzymes.

But here's the important part 👇

❌ A pain-relief patch does not necessarily treat the underlying cause of your knee pain.

Knee pain may be related to:
🦵 Ligament injuries
🦵 Meniscus problems
🦵 Cartilage damage
🦵 Osteoarthritis
🦵 Muscle or tendon problems

So instead of repeatedly masking the pain, find out why your knee is hurting.

👉 If your knee pain keeps coming back, consult an orthopaedic doctor and get the appropriate evaluation. The right treatment depends on the actual cause.

Temporary pain relief is not the same as treating the problem.

🦴 Six months of severe back pain… and the fracture still hadn’t healed.

A 60-year-old woman, Kaliyammal, suffered a fall and developed severe back pain. An X-ray showed a vertebral fracture, and she was initially advised conservative treatment with bed rest.

But even after 6 months, her pain continued. She struggled to sit and was unable to walk comfortably.

When she came for further evaluation, an X-ray showed that the fracture was still unhealed. An MRI also showed bone marrow edema, suggesting ongoing activity at the fracture site.

After evaluating her condition, vertebroplasty was recommended. She initially had concerns but eventually agreed to the procedure.

Following treatment, she recovered well and was able to walk comfortably with significant pain relief.

Today, she says she can walk freely, bend down and carry out her normal activities. ❤️

⚠️ Persistent back pain after a fall should not be ignored, especially in older adults. Depending on the fracture and the patient's condition, further imaging and treatment may be required.

🦶 Does your child have flat feet? Here are some simple exercises that may help strengthen the foot muscles and support the arch.

Flat feet can sometimes cause discomfort during long walks, jumping or walking on uneven surfaces, especially when symptoms are present.

In this video, I show 5 exercises and activities that can help improve foot and lower-limb muscle strength:

1️⃣ Gentle foot/arch stretch – Hold for about 30 seconds and repeat 2–3 times.
2️⃣ Towel scrunches – Curl the toes and pull the towel towards you.
3️⃣ Heel raises – Raise both heels and stand on your toes.
4️⃣ Toe walking – Walk on your toes for a short period.
5️⃣ Outer-edge walking – Walk carefully along the outer border of the feet.

💡 Important: Exercises should be gentle and age-appropriate. Do not force a child's foot into a painful position or overstretch.

Also remember, not every child with flat feet needs treatment. If your child has persistent pain, difficulty walking, frequent fatigue, or problems with activity, get an assessment from a qualified orthopaedic professional.

🩺 Sometimes, the answer isn't in another scan - it's in a proper clinical examination.

When a patient comes with pain, we usually take a detailed history. But physical examination is equally important, especially in orthopaedics.

Take this real patient story.

A school-going girl, Raksh*tha, had been suffering from severe neck and shoulder pain for nearly a year. She had consulted several doctors and undergone multiple investigations, including MRI scans, X-rays and MR angiography, but the reports did not reveal the cause of her persistent pain.

During a detailed clinical examination, a muscle knot/tender trigger point was identified.

Instead of immediately ordering more scans, she was advised physiotherapy and regular exercises. With consistent treatment, her pain reduced significantly and she is now recovering well. 🙏

🔍 The lesson: Imaging is valuable, but it doesn't replace a good clinical examination.

If you have persistent neck, shoulder or back pain despite normal scans, don't simply keep repeating investigations. A proper clinical assessment can help identify causes that may not always appear on an MRI or X-ray.

⚠️ Persistent or severe pain should always be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

🦴 Rickets is not always caused by just calcium or Vitamin D deficiency.

While malnutrition, low Vitamin D, and inadequate calcium intake can contribute to rickets, there can be several other underlying causes.

Possible causes include:

🔹 Certain enzyme or metabolic disorders
🔹 Genetic conditions
🔹 Kidney problems
🔹 Liver conditions
🔹 Problems affecting calcium, phosphate or Vitamin D metabolism

⚠️ Vitamin supplements alone may not be enough if an underlying medical condition is causing the problem.

That’s why identifying the root cause is an important part of treatment.

👶 If your child has persistent bow legs, muscle weakness, difficulty walking, poor growth, or other signs of rickets, early medical evaluation is important.

A pediatrician and pediatric orthopaedic specialist may work together to assess the child and plan appropriate treatment based on the cause.

❤️ Early diagnosis + treating the underlying cause = better bone health for your child.

🦴 Are your child’s legs becoming curved as they grow? Don’t simply assume it will correct itself.

One possible cause is Rickets, a condition that affects growing bones due to problems with calcium and vitamin D metabolism.

When bones don't mineralize properly, children may develop:

⚠️ Bow legs / outward bending of the legs
⚠️ Muscle weakness
⚠️ Difficulty walking
⚠️ Poor growth or short stature
⚠️ Delayed tooth eruption
⚠️ Widening around the wrists or ankles

👶 Bow legs can sometimes be a normal part of early childhood development, but persistent, progressive or severe leg bowing should be evaluated by a doctor.

If you notice changes in your child's leg shape, walking pattern or growth, don't ignore them. Proper clinical assessment and appropriate blood tests or X-rays can help identify the underlying cause.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help protect your child's growing bones. ❤️

Eating healthy and walking every day, but still worried about knee wear as you age? Your feet may also play a role.

One condition to be aware of is flat foot.

Normally, your foot has an inner arch that helps absorb and distribute load when you stand and walk. In people with flat feet, the arch may be reduced or collapsed, which can lead to increased foot pronation and changes in lower-limb biomechanics.

Over time, altered alignment and load distribution can increase stress on the knee in some people and may contribute to knee discomfort or degenerative changes.

⚠️ But remember: Having flat feet does not automatically mean you will develop knee osteoarthritis. Many people with flat feet have no significant symptoms.

If you have flat feet along with:
• Knee pain
• Foot or ankle pain
• Uneven shoe wear
• Difficulty walking or standing for long periods

👉 Get evaluated by an orthopaedic specialist.

Early assessment can help identify alignment problems and guide appropriate exercises, footwear or other treatment when needed.
