Here are the details of vaccines I have taken and why you should take them to (after discussing with your doctor, of course) π
1. MMR vaccine- I have received the measles vaccine as a child. But MR (measles, rubella) was introduced in the NIS (National immunisation schedule) in 2017. Mumps containing vaccine is not yet available in the government schedule. Rubella infection during pregnancy can affect the baby as well and can cause defects in eyes, heart, hearing, etc. making this an important vaccine for adults as well.
2. Tdap vaccine- DTP vaccine, which protects from deadly infections like diphtheria, tetanus and pertusis, is included in NIS. But immunity wanes after some time and we need boosters. One dose of Tdap followed by Td vaccine every 10 years is recommended for all adults.
3. Hepatitis B vaccine- This vaccine was introduced in 2002 in a phased manner and was available all over India by 2007. So a lot of millenials did not receive it as a part of NIS. Hepatitis B spreads through blood, needles and sexual contact. Everyone, particularly those working in healthcare, should be immunised against this disease. It affects the liver and can even cause liver cancer. The vaccine has a 3 dose schedule which protects a normal person for the whole lifetime.
4. HPV vaccine- This protects against cervical cancer, a**l cancer, pe**le cancer, ge***al warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus. It is recommended in both girls and boys before the first sexual contact as it is a sexually transmitted infection. It has some protective benefit even after initiating sexual contact. For adults, it is recommended upto 26 years age, can be given upto 45 years age. It has a 3 dose schedule.
Other vaccines which I plan on taking are-
- Typhoid vaccine
- Hepatitis A vaccine
- Influenza vaccine
Stay tuned for details about vaccination in the elderly! π
