दुर्भाग्य है कि कटे होठ और कटे तालू से ग्रस्त 10% बच्चे 3 महीने भी नहीं जी पाते- क्योंकि माँ और अन्य लोग यह नहीं जानते कि उसे कैसे दूध पिलायें। और माँ का दूध वो खींच नहीं पाते।
जन्म के पहले, या जन्म के बाद, कटे होठ या तालू का पता चलते ही तुरंत एक प्लास्टिक सर्जन, क्लेफ्ट सर्जन और क्लेफ्ट टीम से संपर्क करना चाहिए ताकि उसके पोषण का खयाल रखा जा सके।
बहुत से लोग और डॉक्टर भी ऐसे बच्चों को तीन महीने की उम्र के बाद सर्जन के पास जाने को कहते हैं, जोकि गलत है। 10% बच्चे कुपोषण के कारण तीन महीने तक नहीं जी पाते। इसलिए तुरंत सम्पर्क करना आवश्यक है। क्लेफ्ट टीम पोषण का पूरा ख्याल रखती है और आवश्यक होने पर दूध इत्यादि भी निशुल्क प्रदान करेगी।
