32 Shocks. One Device. A Lifesaving Mission. ❤️⚡

An old ICD (Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator) has served its purpose, delivering 32 shocks to protect its patient from potentially life-threatening heart rhythms.

Today, it has been replaced with a new device.. continuing the mission of protecting a life, one heartbeat at a time.

Behind every device lies a powerful story of technology, timely intervention, and the people who make it possible.
Medical technology doesn’t just support the heart. Sometimes, it gives the heart another chance. ❤️

LEFT MAIN BIFURCATION | PRE-INTERVENTION → FINAL ANGIOGRAM

Patient Profile:

65 Y/M | DM | NSTEMI | Fair LV Function | CHF

A challenging left main bifurcation lesion demonstrating the angiographic appearance before intervention and after successful PCI.

A simple reminder of how meticulous planning, precise technique, and attention to the bifurcation anatomy matter in complex coronary intervention.

Ángela Karime Venegas Hernández, a 16-year-old student from Mexico, developed Vortex Tech, a portable prototype designed to extinguish fire using low-frequency sound waves.

Instead of relying on water, foam, or chemical agents, the device uses acoustic energy to disturb the flame and help cut off combustion.

Reports say the prototype has gone through more than 100 tests. In small-scale trials, it reportedly extinguished small flames in about 5 to 8 seconds.

The idea is still experimental and not yet a replacement for certified fire-extinguishing systems. More research, safety testing, and real-world validation would be needed before it could be used widely.

Still, Vortex Tech points to an interesting possibility for places where water damage or chemical residue could create serious problems, such as electronics, labs, archives, or sensitive equipment areas.

The project has drawn attention as an example of youth innovation in science and engineering, showing how a simple physical principle, sound waves interacting with flames, can be explored as a new approach to fire safety.

ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) is a fundamental principle of radiation protection in the cath lab. But radiation safety is not determined by operator technique alone.

A recent analysis of 654 cardiac catheterization laboratory fluoroscopy systems across 183 hospitals in Illinois and California, USA, highlights the impact of equipment age.

The study found that the median estimated equipment age was 17 years, with 56.5% of systems older than 15 years and 82.5% of hospitals having at least one legacy system.

Contemporary fluoroscopy systems can incorporate dose-reduction technologies that were not routinely available in older platforms.

The key message:
Radiation safety depends on both how we use the equipment and what equipment we have.

This raises an important question for every cath lab:
Are we expecting modern radiation-safety performance from technology that may belong to another generation?
